  • The 1941 Play Ball set is a great set. I actually think it is underappreciated. If you are looking to complete the set in PSA 7 or better, then be prepared to bid aggressive. If you are looking for cards in psa 6 or lower condition, then you will find numerous cards available for reasonable prices. In my opinion the DiMaggio, Williams and Gomez cards are the keys for the set. Finding a nice DiMaggio is very difficult. I swear that 90% of the DiMaggio's that come accross eBay and the auction houses have either poor color or resolution (or both). In general, the set has some problems with poor resolution, tilts and dull colors. I recommend that you take your time with the set. This is definitly a set where you need to focus on the card and not the holder. A 1941 Play Ball card with nice resolution and sharp colors is a work of art.

Great set. Agreed that 7's are pretty easy, 5's and 6's are very affordable. Some of the higher numbers are notoriously off center, so you might check the pops first and be prepared to pay a bit more for some of the tougher ones. PSA doesn't seem to downgrade for toning so if this bothers you keep in mind it's pretty common in this set. If you're going for 8's be patient and stock up on macaroni and cheese- it gets expensive.
Due to the size of the set, the players included and the design I think this set is one of the all time classics.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • I built one about 70% complete in 5's about 3 years ago. It was not too tough & was not too expensive. Really neat cards with plenty of goofy pics. Loved them. Nice HOF's too. Foxx, Hubbell, Ott, Vaughn, Dickey, Ruffing, Greenberg, rookie Reese. Other posts are correct in saying the Dimaggio is really tough condition wise. And that one ain't cheap. I paid very cheap for pop 1's in 5 at the time so it should not take you too long to complete. Have fun.
Orioles cards from 1960 to today.

    Be good my brothers.
