I would be upset, but not from a collecting standpoint. While the Sac and Halves are somewhat useless, how would we get along without cents? How else would you make $48.36? or pay Sales tax on a dollar. the 99 cent menu would be obsolete if you lived somewhere with 8% sales tax, and that would be a travesty to say the least . I just don't see how you could work it without something representing 1 cent...... but thats just my 2 cents

Eliminate the cent. It has almost zero buying power. Many nations in Europe dropped the 1 & 2 euro cent coins, and those are worth more than a US cent.

Change the nickle design for real... no stupid Virginia law about keeping Jefferson and Monticello.

Change the dime deisgn.... Reagan? A theme of Liberty, Freedom, Democracy??

Change the quarter design after 2009. Theme?

Drop the half.

Keep the dollar coin. Theme design?

Make a two dollar coin. Same Theme.


So I really think all our coins should change, and the designs should follow a theme of values of our nation, and symbols.

Drop the second decimal place. Axe the cent, the nickel and the quarter (too bad you later states). Reformat the half to a size between the current nickel and quarter. Coin $1, $5 and $10. Print no more $1 and $5 bills. The only fractional coins we really should have are 10c and 50c.

They won't do this, as rational as it is. However, inflation will naturally destroy the cent in our money. By cent, I am referring to the second decimal place generally. The quarter makes for a point of inconvenience in getting there.

....and when we get there, let's drop the dead presidents and return to some interesting personifications of Liberty in our obverse designs.

The cent is wasteful. Stop it. It's also toxic so recall it for proper disposal. Few would
be returned since it's not worth the effort but it would get some of them out of the en-
vironment. It would be a boon to some collectors who want to see higher prices for the
existing coins.

The half dollar doesn't circulate so stop minting it. The Kennedy set would be complete
and more people would collect it as well.

The dollar coin should be placed into circulation. The banks won't do it so just start ship-
ping them whether they order them or not. They'll pass them out before their vaults get
full. This will be very detrimental to the collectors for all the circulating quarters because
velocity of these coins and their importance will be reduced dramatically. There would be
only token quarter production for years. This might make the states coins a little more in-
teresting since there would be mint and proof set only issues produced.

We really should have a five dollar coin as well. There would be a wider array of goods
and services available by machine if they could dependably dispense anything more val-
uable than a damn candy bar.

I agree with you except that I think ww could use a half dollar coin, but not the pocket chewers with JFK on them. You point about the quarter's importance waning with a productive dollar coin is interesting. In particular, that could be the catalyst we need to eventually wean it off of the onsumers and stop them as well. I maintain, we only need 10c and 50c fractional dollar coinage and should be rounding to the tenth of a dollar not the hundredth. Inflation dictated it long ago.

If you apply the same criteria that determined the half cent was useless in 1857 to our coinage since then, the cent (thus the second decimal place) should have been retired long ago.

I'd be a bit upset. That is because our Gov't would continue wasting money. Coins circulated for many years while bills don't last long.

An economical small step would be to eliminate the Dollar Bill and print more Twos. Cents really aren't needed but halves could become more useful if the Dollar was a coin.

Eventually I can see coin from 5 cents through 5 dollars with bills for larger amounts.

A thought just crossed my mind. How about a devaluation! One new dollar (bill) would be given for 5 old dollars.

Currency and coins are already obsolete. We have just postponed the inevitable. I keep waiting for a prominent business to say debit cards or credit cards only. Plastic is here to stay.

The quarter is not a handy denomination and does complicate things at this time
because it is so little money and necessitates the continued production of the nic-
kel which will soon cost more than 5c to produce. With some 35+ billion quarters
in existence it would be overly expensive to merely stop using them, though. Per-
haps we'll soon have a cheapened nickel as the smallest unit of change and that
might last for years.

It may not be too long until the quarter has been reduced to the point that it's the
smallest coin.

Something should be done to revitalize the currency since it's costing the economy
a lot of money and the government their share just to maintain the fiction that noth-
ing has changed. A great deal has changed and the rate of the change is increasing.

I could see this theory of dumping the second decimal. Leave the dime its current size. Make a 50c piece the size of a nickel and a dollar coin the size of a quarter. Could make a $2 or $5 coin the size of a sac and make it a dual color(like mexican change) so it won't the absent minded won't confuse it with the dollar coin.
