'81 Recreational Cello Box Bust . . .

Do love the smell of that gum . . . and the chalky fingertips.

Box didn't yield much in the way of gradable cards . . . But for fifty bucks, very enjoyable, nonetheless!

Felt like a sixth-grader again.

  • What's prefered with this year. Cello or wax?? I was actually thinking of ripping a box to help complete my '81 Brewers team set.
May I ask where you bought it from??
    Thanks
  • Kruk Cards. Included mouse droppings free of charge!

What Brewers are you looking for?

I believe I should have a few extras on hand.
  • Actually looking for stuff to get graded. Anything at a shot for a 9 or better??
  • Geez, ol' Lynn Nolan looks like a baby in that pic.

  • Great memories for the '81 set!

    - My dad......"What????...you want a whole box of those damn things - we can't afford the 6.00 for all those..." - LOL

    - Using rubber bands to hold the team sets together - hey, I was 10....

    - Just KNOWING that Joe Charboneau rookie card would be worth big bucks someday.....

    - Yep - I marked on ALL the team checklists and set checklists - what a great feeling when you got the whole back all scratched out in marker!

    - ...hanging up all the extra Yankee cards and throwing darts at them.....

    - .....never got any cavities from the gum....

    - Rusty Kuntz (...it's pronounced Koonts!)

    - Love the AL Championship card - George Brett in action

    - Love the Carlton Fisk card - I always thought that helmet color was COOL

-.....AND, still looking for that centered Johnny Bench without the print stain!

Still remember my dad coming home with a cello box of '77 Topps baseball for me from Vic's wholesale!
Also St. Nick would bring me a stocking full of basketball packs because that's what my favorite sport was in the late 70's.

  • And where did we buy it from??

I busted a cello box that I got from BBCE a couple months back. I had very good luck with it. Most of the cards were well centered and I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-60 cards were very gradeable. (expecting a 9 or better).

i meant to post my box break earlier.. nothing to be excited about, i think i only got about 25 centered cards that are "submittable".. everything was mint, but the centering was nasty..

    Thanx for sharing your memories!

Dal - I also used rubber bands - and some of my best cards were wrapped in rb's and stuck in my ass pocket for the entire summer - just hoping to make a great trade!

For those too young - we actually did a lot of "flipping" and "tossing" also - but never with one's favorite players!!!

I have a 3 box rack case of 81T - I did give a rack with Ryan on top away last year to a guy who sounded so depressed around Christmas time - so there's 71 racks.

Some day I will open them and make a raw set.
    Happy new year

I just opened four 81 cello boxes today. I got some pretty nice cards. Of course, most of my cards were O/C but I think I got many really nice, submittable (9 or better) all-star cards. I have a couple of Ryans, Roses, etc. that I might submit as well. It was fun regardless of the outcome. If any of you guys need something, PM me and I will see if I have it and let you know what shape the card(s) appear to be in. There were many common cards in this break that were actually centered and nice. I'll give them to you if you simply reimburse me for shipping. Bobby
  • Bobby, great news on your box break. Like I had said in a previous post, I tried to bolster my all stars through breaking a couple of boxes from BBCE with no luck at all. The centering was just horrible.

Any luck on getting a nice Sutter, Carlton, or Lynn?

    Hey Will,

Thanks, I am pleased with my results overall. No luck on the Sutter or Carlton. Here are the AS cards that I feel have a good shot at 9 or better (i.e., nicely centered):

    Schmidt (3)
    Kingman (6)
    Lopes (4)
    Russell (1)
    Parker (1)
    Carew (1)
    Fisk (1)
    Brett (1)
    Stone (1)
    Lynn (1)
Gura (3) the infamous blue dot is present though...
    Dent (1)

I also have many other cards that I feel are gradeable including 2 Ryans. I have two more boxes coming as well. I will keep you posted. If there are any non-AS cards that you need, just let me know. I am not sure whether you collect cards aside from the all-stars. Bobby
  • Wow, you did good on that Lynn if it comes back a 9. I just won a PSA 8 Carlton, which is an upgrade to the 7 that I had. Thanks for the offer, but I am swimming in 81 commons.

I saw that even that PSA 10 Gura that was posted on here had the blue dot. The Kingman and Schmidt seem to have been in a good spot on the sheet since I see a number of them in good condition. I have also seen quite a few nice Dents. I have pulled a ton of Steve Stone's, but never found one centered. Good job on the Lopes too, it took me awhile to find him in PSA 9.

    Any scans?

Just think of the world and sports events that have happened since 1981 while those cards were frozen in time:

    -Four presidents, two almost assassinated
    -Terrorist attacks
    -2 major U.S.-led wars
    -Challenger
    -Fall of USSR
    -Internet (widespread use)
-Beginning and end of Michael Jordan's, Wayne Gretzky's, and Joe Montana's careers
-Florida Marlins winning two World Series
-deaths of Mickey Mantle, Joe D, Ted Williams, etc etc
    -insert your own

Old packs, to me, have that weird aura of a time capsule.

No scans at this point. My fiancee has our camera and she is in Louisiana right now visiting family. When she returns, I will see about taking a few shots and posting (if I can figure that out). I'll also keep you posted as to my results from PSA. The Lynn is really nice L/R (50/50) but is probably 60/40 T/B. I think it has the weakest shot at 9 of all the cards I've mentioned. Is the T/B centering usually the issue with the Lynn? I have several other copies that are horrible that way.

These cards are like a time capsule I guess. The world was certainly a different place back then...
  • Bobby-- I need 1981 Topps Texas Rangers for Psa grading, then my team set registry. Your assistance is appreciated-- Thanks-----Tony

    Hi Tony,

No problem. I'll see what I have that looks decent later tonight and let you know. I am pretty sure that there will be some decent cards. Bobby
