Rafael Furcal goes to the Dodgers....Stupid Decision by the Dodgers?

As you may have heard, Rafael Furcal has pretty much signed with the LA Dodgers over the weekend for 3 years for a total of $39M.

Now, let me preface this by saying that I am not mad that he chose the Dodgers over the Cubs as Furcal was seen as a lock for the North Side of Chicago. I wasn't that high on the guy before and didn't think he was worth the reported $10-$11M per year, let alone $13M a year.

So, are there any Dodger fans on this board? If so, what do you think about this move? Personally, I think it is yet another dumb move by one of the most storied franchises in all of baseball. While it is one thing to overpay and win, it is another thing to overpay and lose. Unfortunately, the Dodgers seem to have the latter issue mastered. They went after Jose Valentin last year and gave Kevin Brown a huge contract that backfired. Then when they have an opportunity to sign free agents from their own team, they let them go.

At $13M a year, Furcal better be one of the best players in all of baseball. Given what we have seen, I don't think that is the case. Heck, Vlad Guerrero made $12.5M this past year, and he is much better overall that Furcal. Sure, SS is a scarce position to find top talent in MLB, but at $13M.....??// Jeez. Damn, Tejada made $11M in 2005 and he was a highly sought after SS last year.

My first reaction was WOW, they really overpaid, but that division is so weak that getting him along with some more talent might push them over the top. If that raises attendance then they probably different over pay as much as I originally thought. Time will tell, if the gamble pays off or not.

On a side note I read this a.m. where the Yanks lost between $50 and $100 million this year. image

Maybe they are thinking of 2nd base, he offered to do that for another team.
  • At $13M a year, Furcal better be one of the best players in all of baseball

I think that pretty much sums it up. I love the kid, but he's certainly not one of the best or most valuable players in all of baseball. Now way overpaid. We occasionally hear reports here in Boston of the total mismanagement and disarray in the Dodger organization. I'm sure a lot of that is due to bitterness towards Frank McCourt (Boston guy who was first bidding for the Sox before buying the Dodgers). But they have made some crazy signings going back to the Kevin Brown deal.
  • I think Furcal is better than some of you are giving him credit for. He batted .280 this year even though he struggled with a nagging injury for the first half of the year. Once he got healthy he really hit. He is a very good lead off man, steals bases, good bunter, gets to a lot of balls that other SS's don't get to and has the best arm of anyone at SS. But 13 mil? might be a little much. Time will tell. Just another chapter in the escalting salaries.
  • The Dodgers overpay players almost as bad as the Yankees do. Remember they paid a starting pitcher with a losing record (Darren Driefort) $55 million for 5 years!!
