That is a second century Greek Imperial of very little value.

  • Looks like the emperor could be Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD). And the thing is, this could be a very scarce piece, worth around $30-$60 or so. But something like this on ebay is a pretty hard sell as far as getting anything close to its retail value. Roman Provencials are a VERY specialized market, therefore you have to get those very specialized collectors bidding to get a halfway decent price for a pretty well circulated roman bronze coin. To most ebay bidders, a worn ancient roman bronze coin is a worn ancient roman bronze coin is a worn ancient roman bronze coin....etc.... the novice doesn't differentiate between a common 4th century AE2, a much scarcer sestertius of Trajan or a rare Roman provencial (like this one could be). They'll oftentimes put down a bid of $1, maybe $5 if the piece looks kinda interetsting, but lack of bidding competition will stop it there. ('course maybe your friend has no intention of putting it up on ebay)
  • Thank you all for your responses.... I will let him know and thanks to ajaan for providing the pic. My friend at this time is a newer collector and has no intention to sell.

    cheers
