Need help! Which to start, Lincoln's or Buff Nickels?

Hello,

I would like some help on what might be best to start: a Lincoln (Wheat or Mem), or Buffalo PCGS registry set?

I now have a few complete Ike, and Sacagawea MS registry sets and some other various Lincoln
D/D cents now.

I would like to collect the "Top Grade, or Close To it" MS66 or 67.
It would be nice to spend an avg. around $200 per coin once or twice a month, with a few at 500. - 1,000.
I would like to finish the set in a couple years if possible.
And would like for the set to have the possibility to go up in value in the next 10-20 years or so !

I sure would like to hear some of your thoughts if possible !!

Thank you
Mike

You can easily do the Memorial Lincoln set. No way the 09-59 Lincoln set. I do not collect buffs, but I think the same is true, not possible even for $200 a coin.

Slugfootball, the fact that you even mentioned the nickels as a possibility (which they clearly are not, based upon your stated parameters), leads me to think you should study and learn, before you start spending money on any additional coins - just my opinion.
  • If your looking for you new set to rise in value, consider the fact that 2009 should bring about a new design to the linclon cent. Should make collecting memorials worth you while.
    How much for that one
  • Well, the wheats are at 140 for a PDS set, maybe a year set to launch, or a short set 1930 to 1958. Lincs are a hot series and will continue to stay hot atleast until 2009. If you wanted to focus on the memorials it may be more cost effective. The Buffs are pretty steep too.

If you haven't, pick up some books on the series, as suggested.
  • There are plenty of Lincoln experts on the boards that could help you out. There are Buffalo experts too.

Edited to say $200 a coin with $1000 on a few is not too ridiculous for Buffalo nickels. You can get a lot of nice ms63/64 coins, and maybe go au on some of the keys. Either save up for a nice au 26-s or get that one in xf. If you can save up for a while maybe you can even find a nice ms60 or ms62 or something.

I would wait and compound that 1,400,and buy a coin every three months.Buffs, semi rare/key dates.

Does that mean you are completely out of the Ikes!?image
Better get a good scope...those Lincs are a LOT smaller than those big ole Ikes
that you've been staring at for the past few years.

Congrats on your MS Ike Set! That's one heck of a set!!

I'd probably go with the Lincoln memorials.....errors, that is!image
Get some books and may you enjoy the journey as much as you did the Ikes.image

  • I second the Lincoln Cents. I think many of us who are collecting Lincolns at this time are going to be glad we did in 2009. Don't get me wrong...I'm definitely not into Lincolns for investment purposes...but the values may go up a bit when they make a big stink about new lincoln designs hitting the press. I truly love lincoln cents...I have ever since I was 12...and that's exactly why I collect them. My collection is below on my sig. line!

Good luck with whatever you choose. Now I'm off to find your IKE set!!!

  • Thanks to all for your thoughts, and a seperate Thank you to Brian for the kind words.

After a better look at the PCGS price guide it looks as though I could collect a Lincoln wheat
    set with 40% of the coins between ms66 - ms67, and about 40% being 63 - 65 and 20% just being
tough period, lucky to get ms60 !!

As for a quick look at the Buffalo nickels it looks as though I could save and get about 20 of the 75 coins
in 64 to 66, another 25 coins ms60 to 64, and the other 30 coins in circulated grades.

This Leeds me to another question!

How is it to collect a series in which you have such a wide range of grades? Is this more rewarding, or
    more frustrating?

I will post a new thread with this question

Thank you all for your help

  • Awesome Ike set! I'm a Lincoln collector who's also turning into an Ike collector. (My Ikes and my Lincolns).

The good thing about Lincolns is you can do ms60-ms64 or rb coins on 09-28 or so, ms64/65 on 29-35 and ms66 36-date. Unless you get your early P coins in too high of a grade, that will still make a nicely matched set. It's also very easy to buy ms66 late dates very cheap raw, and then get them slabbed. Probably for Buffalo nickels you would need to buy almost all dates slabbed.

Jaime, thats EXACTLY the direction I am heading AFTER I finish up my 34-58 group. Only 4 or 5 more coins to go in that set (most are 66's with a few 65's)...then I'm heading into uncharted territory with the rd's and r/b's in 09-30...

In time, I will also be going back and upgrading the 65's that I have in my 34-58 group and bumping a few of my 65's to 66's in my memorial set.

Time for me to get out the old checkbook...it's not going to be cheap!!!!!!!

Just thought I would put in my 10 cents worth. If you have noticed my sets have very mixed grades. I like to buy pretty coins not just the grade. A lot of AU55-58 coins look better than some uncs. And you can really find some nice coins in 61 and 62 holders. I you limit yourself to a certain grade I think it takes away from the whole reason for collecting and that is ti have fun and enjoy the hunt. Even my Merc set that made #1 in 2002 and 2004 (when the big boys with deep pockets weren't there yet) I had various grades and not all had FB. I liked to buy those 80% FB that had good hair detail and save the THOUSANDS that thoes little band cost on some dates (like the 19-D).

    I'm sorry I started rambling.

Anyway I guess I am saying collect what you like in the grades you like and can afford.
