John Marshall Comm. SOLD OUT !!

Maybe not as exciting as the Marine Comm. but none the less a fine coin. I picked up one of each, Proof and Unc. and I was pleasently surprised to see how good they looked. The design on the Marine is actually small compared to the Marshall, it's really pretty cool.
Maybe this will be a sleeper. The last counts are about 138,000 Proof and 48,000 Unc. plus 18,000 Chronicle sets which contain the Unc. coin.

How do you get the numbers?

I have two of the proof and three of the unc. I think they will be better in the long run than the Marines.

Yep that's right, so add 50,000 more Proofs. Funny that the link didn't seem to include those in the count.

  • I like the design - both front and back. Mr. Marshall does look a little intense, though. And for those collectors that appreciate John Marshall's historical significance, I'm sure this would be a prized coin in their collection. But to the average Joe (or Jody) in the street, how many people know who he was and what he did. I live 10 miles from the John Marshall house in downtown Richmond VA. I drove past it every workday for 5 years -- and I didn't know who he was until recently. Perhaps all the Supreme Court nominee stuff going on right now is spurring more interest in the coin -- but for how long? With the low mintage, I think it will do well no matter what -- but if they'd stuck Elvis on the coin instead, at that mintage the price would go through the roof. Supply and demand.

I happen to like the 1999 Dolley Madison Dollar -- which has only slightly higher mintage. It's value has been pretty flat. But I like the coin and plan to keep it for a long time. And that is what matters first and foremost.

  • I don't think it sold out. The Mint probably just stopped selling them because of low demand.
