A big slab for a small card

I recently got this 1956 Topps football card back from a submission. I've never seen one in a big slab like this, and it was the only 1956 card I had in that submission. Think they just goofed? The slab is the same size as the ones they use for 1965 Topps tallboys.

Sheesh. I think it looks pretty nice, but kind of defies explanation. Maybe you've just been beta tested.

Or maybe they ran out of the regular size (pre-'57) slabs and this was all that was on-hand. Could be worse, they could have put it in one of these slabs with the condoms. Those look horrible.
  • Mike, I believe that if you measure your card, it is oversized and too big to fit in a normal sized holder. I have seen a few '56's holdered like yours. Nice card though!

I've noticed with 1956 Topps football, and I assume baseball from that year is the same, is that the cards are really snug in the PSA holder and just barely fit. I agree that that '56 looks slightly oversized and is probably too large for the regular PSA holder.

    Hey Mike,

I just received some 56's back from PSA last month, and two of them were "not holdered" as over sized cards. They came back with hand written stickies (on the card savers) that said "too wide for a 2b - over sized card." If you hold the card up to a standard PSA holder you can see there's no way it could fit unless they redesigned (or enlarged) the holders.

Now for the funny part. I just looked to see which cards they were, and sure enough ... one of them is the exact same card (#45 Browns team card), and our two cards could be twins (same centering, corners, etc).

I think it just reproves that age old theory, that dealers get all the breaks! image Although I'm not sure how excited I'd be to have two tallboy holders sticking up out of my 1956 set box either?

Here's an idea. I'll send you my other over-sized raw one, and you can try to collect the whole set in tall boy holders. Now there's a real "type set" challenge for you!

Looks like you guys are right: the card does appear to be wider than most. It's weird, though: I sent in a bunch of these cards in another batch, and they all fit in the small holders.

Sure, Mike, send me your cards and I'll get them holdered for you. I can probably get any 6's and 7's you have upgraded, too. Or maybe it would be easier to just send you a few of the special stickers they give us dealers? image
