what makes the Nikon Coolpix such a great camera?

lsicalsica Posts: 1,623 ✭✭✭✭
Kind of more of a techie question, but what makes the Nikon Coolpix such a better camera for close in highly-reflective detail work (read: coins) over other cameras? Is the macro lens all the superior? Does it use less (or no) jpeg image compression?

Thanks to all for their help.

  • I like my Coolpix. I guess the trade-offs choosen by Nikon work well for coins.

I'd say I think Cosmicdebris' Cannon works even better!

Nikon has always made great cameras, digi and film. They know their optics.

Great macro, excellent lense, plenty of features.

Like most digicams, the degree of compression is adjustable from none (tiff files) to a bunch.

Four things give Nikon the edge in digital:

#1 -- They are a photography company that went digital and not the other way around.

#2 -- Nikon knows optics. Their lenses are among the finest in the world. This is particularly so for macro lenses and compact digicams.

#3 -- They understand how to make a camera that is usable. They've been perfecting the human-camera interface long before digital and photography were even used in the same sentence.

#4 -- They "do things the right way" as a company. They are not like many digital photography companies that are in a hurry to get the latest product out with the higest number of megapixels or whatever the latest marketing gimick is -- they would rather take the time and engineer the product to the best of their ability.

    Take care...Mike

As with cars, TV sets, watches and even with types of grass, MINE is always the best or worst. Just as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, cameras are the best if yours works. My car is better than your car. My watch is worth more than your watch. Actually I have the most accurate watch in the world. It is broke but it is 100% accurate twice a day.
With cameras I've got a few friends that swear by Leica. One friend says if it isn't a Bronica, it isn't a camera. ONe friend owns a photo studio and wouldn't allow anything but a Nikon in the place. And don't forget NASA only sends Hasselblads up into space because they require the best in optics. Now Canon and Pentex lenses are available all over the world, Konica Minolta is world renoun, everyone has had a Vivitar or Kodak but what can top a Rollei. Voigtlander is famous for closeups but who can find lenses for them. I have about 25 cameras but end up using a Fuji S7000 and am thinking of buying an S9000 for all closeups.
My thoughts are that it's usually not the camera but the photographer that makes great photos.

I didn't care for the Coolpix when compared with the Kodak Z740. The Z had much better images and much better macro. But for DSLR, Nikon and Minolta are way up there.
