Coatings - Yes or No?

I'm looking to submit a few cards from the 90's for player sets and those cards came with the coating. Any problems removing that coating for grading?
Does it knock grades down at all?
Thanks!

  • I have the same card, graded both ways. With the coating and without. The PSA 10 has no coating, so I would say no it does not lower the grade as long as the coating is in good shape. FYI, for registry purposes they count as seperate entries.

I used to submit a lot of newer cards. I always removed the coating. My percentage of PSA 10's went way up. The only downside is that some people prefer the coating and sometimes the card will sell for more. But, I would rather have a PSA 10 with no coating than a PSA 9 w/coating. Also, if you wait to take the coating off until you are actually mailing the card to PSA, you limit the chance of a surface scratch and the card will arrive at PSA with a super shiny, scratch free surface. It helps get the 10's.
