Harold II died in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings when he was shot in the eye with an arrow fired by the invading Normans. His reign lasted nine months and he was the last Anglo-Saxon King of England. I have a personal connection to this era, William the Conqueror was my 31st great-grandfather. After the battle William became King of England and was crowned on Christmas day 1066.

Last Anglo-Saxon king? I dispute that fact. True he was chosen by the Wittan council who were technically Anglo-Saxon. But Harold's lineage was mostly Danish.
Edward the Confessor was the last 'true' Anglo-Saxon king as he was directly related to Æthelred the Unready.
Simon, If Harold were here today he would pull the arrow out of his eye and tell you that he thought of himself as a Saxon. Of course then he would tell you that he wanted to be a dancer in the Spice Girls reunion tour.
