93 Jeter SP grading problems

I recently sent in to PSA a mint 1993 Jeter SP. The card is at least mint. The card was returned to me by PSA as not meeting factory spec's for measurement. Anyone familiar with this problem with 93 SP's? I am tempted to send it to Beckett because it is in MINT condition. 4 perfect corners, no scartches at all and perfectly centered. I was sure it would get at least a 9 and maybe a even that elusive 10. It was not returned as trimmed or altered, just not meeting factory spec's. I dont want to be critical of PSA but I dont see any difference in the size of this card compared to any of the other cards in the 1993 SP set I have. Advise/Comments? Help please!

  • The same thing happened to me on a 1993 SP Jeter. I sent it to PSA around 10 months ago. It came back for failing to meet min. size. I resent it to PSA and they confirmed that it was a little small. Since I pulled it from a pack and it was the same size as other SPs that I had, I sent it to BGS. It came back a 9.5.

  • Guess it's off to Beckett with it then! It really is a beauty.

Yeah, you gotta take the good with the bad sometimes. PSA seems to have a real strict tolerance policy when it comes to the card sizes, where as with BGS it's a little more lax. This is good as it helps to keep trimmed cards from being slabbed and sold as unaltered, but at the same time it takes no account to the fact that there are legitimate size variations attributed to the manufacturering process. I recall someone on this board pulling a Fleer Jordan rookie out of pack and rec'd a similiar response from PSA. Being a fresh pull, the card had to be legit as why anyone would bother to trim a Jordan rookie and inserted it back into a pack is beyond me.

If you really want it in a PSA holder just resubmit until they holder it. Minimum size depends on the mood of the grader, not factory specs.
  • Exactly, i've had this problem with at least 5 jeters from 93 sp that have come back not holdered.
you just have to keep wasting postage and resubmitting, they all eventually come back graded. I've had 4 8's and 1 9 and all 5 came straight from the box and looked identically perfect.
