NGC gold - how to resubmit to PGCS?

Hi,

I recently bought a 1910-D $10, and it is graded MS63 by NGC. I'd be interested in having it regraded by PGCS, both because it's more accepted, and as an experiment. How do people recommend I do that? Should I crack the slab open (and if so, what's the best way), or should I send them the coin slabbed?

Original thread here

Thanks,

Crack it. At that price you have little to lose and if it's an experiment, you will remove any possible holder bias/interference when it's being PCGS graded. I don't think you have much to worry about bodybag-wise.

If you want to risk it, crack it open and resubmit. Some people believe you will get better results but there is more risk associated with it. If you don't want that risk, send for crossover service and either specify a min grade or cross at any. Some people think that crossovers have less of a chance of crossing because of holder bias.

I have done both and haven't seen any problems.

I would not bother to submit to PCGS. If you really want a PCGS MS63 holder, submit in the NGC MS63 holder. Why take a chance on less than MS63, or a BB?

If you're going to crack an NGC coin out and send it to PCGS, I'd recommend finding less expensive coins (with less downside - the difference in price between an MS63 and MS62 is not insignificant) to experiment with. There are plenty of such candidates out there.

Send it for crossover in the holder or leave it as is.

Thanks all for the advice. It sounds like cracking isn't worth it.

for me the ultra smart move is

if the coin is a really nice eye appeal solid ms 63 in the ngc holder then keep it as is

or if you need the pcgs plastic holder

then sell the ngc holder with the coin in it

then go out and buy a coin you love that is in a pcgs ms 63 holder
