Where is a good place to have your junk silver melted

Where is a good place to have your junk silver melted in return for silver bars? Just curious, I have some that needs to melted. What is the usual minimum amount needed by these firms? What is there cut? Thanks for the info.

Look up SMELTER in a google search. I am sure there are plenty of them east of the Mississippi. We used to have one called ASARCO in Omaha, but it shut down. When I worked in the photography industry years ago, the silver nitrate (flake) was reclaimed and processed, I just cannot remember the company name.

    Good luck !

Not to pry, but why would you want to melt it? By "junk silver", do you mean literally silver scrap from industry or do you mean the generic term for face value silver coins?

It will cost you a fair amount to do so. The coins will lose any collectibility that they have. If they're US coins, they are already hallmarked by arguably the finest maker--the US government.

There is almost no such thing as counterfeit face value silver coins. But there is apparently a growing doubt of the purity of silver bars and even some reports of hollowed out silver bars. That can't really happen with coins.

Silver bars aren't divisible, while coins already are, in standard 1 unit (dollar), half unit (half dollar), quarter unit (quarter) and tenth unit (dime).

And face value US coins are nearly as liquid as silver bars are. And can even be more liquid depending on your location and the maker of the bar.

Weiss, very well said..... I usually share the same sentiment. I assumed this silver was not coins. My bad if they are...... NEVER MELT SILVER COINS !
  • Thanks guys for the info. The silver in question is coins WLH, Wahington quarters, and Roosevelts that are common and in poor to good condition. Just taking up space in one of my safes. I like cointagious' idea I might try to trade with a dealer.
