Scanned images of toned Morgans on Ebay.....

I have developed a skill which has been very beneficial for me when buying toned Morgan dollars on ebay. Sometimes, when the pictures on Ebay are scanned, you need to translate the colors that you see to what the actual colors on the coin are. I bought am 1887 NGC Morgan MS64 on ebay for $43. The pics mae it look brown and ugly. I knew the images were scans and bet the coin would look nicer in hand. Indeed, when i recieved the coin, the toning was cranberry and purple, just as pretty as hell. if I learn how to use camera, I will put up images in a few days.

Has anyone had similar luck?

I would think that trying to translate color from a scan would be a crapshoot- since brown and ugly toning also looks brown and ugly on the scan.....

I disagree! If one has used a scanner a lot, and also knows what certain patterns of toning in real life look like, you can discern quite a bit from a scan.
But one has to be open to this. I see far too many folks take scans, or even photographs as an absolute. I been saying this for a long time.
    Nobody listens, and that's great.image

Can you explain further for those of us who have not acquired this skill? image

Sure, when you see a scanned image it's basically like looking at the coin head on in real life. Most toned coins when looked at head on in person,
will look dark and drab. When you tilt them in the light is when the colors come to life. With a scanner, you can tilt the coin and get some color to show.
If take a long time scanning a coin I can come close to what the coin looks like. I've also shown examples in the past, of a scanned coin, and then
imaged very nicely by someone. You can also sometimes take a scanned coin, put it in an image editor, and do a quick fix auto levels.
This will help bring out the color better, and give a better idea what it might look like.

I never claim to be an expert, but it helps if one has seen enough coins in person to know what certain toning patterns colors etc. will look like in person. I could take a coin right now (but I don't feel like taking the time) and throw it on the scanner flat. You might say, it's dark and ugly.
I could then show you an image done by a number of our board members, and it is night and day. Just keep not believing me as I pick off some more ugly coins.image

  • Some of my best finds and for great prices in toners came from sellers that don't know Jack about taking good pictures and bidders that can't tell a diamond in the rough. Gary

What the coin actually looks like in person. Except although the color is nailed, it doesn't show the nice cartwheel luster.
    OK, I'm done here.image
