I picked up a cool clipped peace dollar this weekend... pics inside (guess the grade)

Another coin I bought on a whim because it looked neat image What I really like is the dramatic Blakesley (sp?) effect on the rim--the coin is really flattened. Oh, feel free to guess the grade, as well (NGC).

You do see clipped Peace Dollars on eBay now and again, most of them are dated 1922 or 1923. Here is a 1922 on eBay, not my coin but a nice example. The 1925 pictured above is something of an unusual date.

My own collection includes a 1922-S, 1923-S and I think maybe a 1924-S. I have a good friend who has been collecting clips for over 30 years and if his want list is accurate, he has at least one of all of the following dates with clips: 1921; 1922-P, -D, and -S; 1923-P and -S; 1924-P and -S; 1925-P; 1926-P, -D, and -S; 1927-D; and 1934.

Jeremy PM'd me the grade so I won't play, I'll just give the hint that my first impression was the same as his, and we were both wrong. image

Nice coin. You can really see the Blakesly Effect on that coin.

grade ???? well, there is a scratch on the eagle, two long scratches. This could hurt the grade considerably. There appears to be either die fatigue causing loss of detail(mushy), or wear...but there is a lot of luster which doesn't appear to be whizzing or cleaning.... so, with all that said

    AU58 in my opinion.

Now someone please explain the Blakesly Effect to me.

So the grade... it's an AU58. The real giveaway is a patch of circulation lines on the neck that can only be seen at a few angles. I first looked at the coin and thought I saw 63... looked at the coin and said, sure looks like it. Looked at the holder again... 58?! Well, sure is one of those AU63 coins if you ask me.
