    Congratulations Mr. Filam:

You really scored some great coins this go-around. The 1915-S centavo and the 1910-S peso are key dates in their respective series. The 1915-S is extremely hard to find with any color. And the 1910-S in MS 63 -- you just rarely find it so nice.

But the Mr. Big of the haul is that 1905-S 50 centavo in MS 62. That date is really, really rare in unc. In MS 62 it's a multi-thousand dollar coin.

And I'm glad to see you beginning to put some flesh on your proof series. Those gem proof 5 centavos are beautiful coins to look at.

One question about the 1917-S centavos: Is that a matched pair; type 1/type 2 or are they both of one type or another?

    Warm regards,

Hi Mr. Fun, I looked at both under 20x, but don't believe they are overdates. The MS63 has doubling on the top of the "7" only. I don't think either is a variety, but then again, varieties are not my strong suit. Hope you can have a look and educate me a bit when we meet up again. Until then image

In the early years, they used the original dies for the reverse of the centavo, characterized by clear eagle feathers on the wings and chest of the eagle, and nice definition on the head. The strike on the shield is crisp; with all the stars unblurred. That die (or dies) were in use for part of 1917, and are the Type 1 for the 1917 centavo.

Then they introduced the new dies towards the latter part of 1917. These are dies that gave the mushy strike so common during the latter years of the centavo series. The eagle chest is more rounded, less feathers. The eagle feathers on the wing are mushy. And you never see crystal clear stars on the shield anymore. This is type 2.

This is sort of akin to the reverse of 1938 and the reverse of 1940 on the Jefferson nickels. Only with the Jefferson's, the type 1 is the mushy die and type 2 is where they cleared up the mushiness, while with the US Philippine centavos, it goes the other way.

Just look at the reverse of the coins and if you have one of each, the difference will be IMMEDIATELY obvious to your naked eye.

Hurriedly, from Bangkok. In a few hours, I'm off the America.

I'M LEANING TOWARDS TYPE 2. ALTHOUGH WING FEATHERS ARE SHARP, CHEST FEATHERS ARE VERY WEAK AND STARS ARE KINDA FLAT.

Watch out for that seller. I do know for a fact that he has several other user ids that have gotten kicked out of ebay. He just comes back with someone else fronting a credit card to be able to sell. He's been kicked out for shill bidding and too many complaints several times.

    Check out rafael1964, marianong_garapon and melito_glor. They're all him
    This is fun! =)
