Phillipine 1929M 20 centavo question
.jpg)
OK guys what do I have here. I just won this one on ebay along with 6 other differant 20 centavo pieces. One of them was a 1928 M. The mint mark is to the left of the date. However, the 29M does not show a mint mark to the left of the date. I just started collecting PhilAm coins 2 weeks ago and haven't located the books yet.............Any explanation for the missing mint mark?????? Thanks in advance......Rick

The US Mint in Manila wasn't very fanatic about their mint marks and especially in the Commonwealth era (1936 through 1945), no mint mark is a not-uncommon variety. Whether it was due to simple omission or weak striking pressure (or a weakly impressed mint mark combined with weak striking pressure)I don't know. I just know the no-mint-mark coins are a gettable variety, and I get 'em.
But this is the first that I've seen on a pre-Commonwealth coin. From the scan, it's missing totally. And it's a nice looking coin too.
Please examine it when you get it, and let us know if you can see a vestigial (very faint) mint mark on the coin. If not, you have an interesting and pretty valuable variety on your hands. Congratulations!
And if you were so inclined, several of the more fanatic US-PHilippine coinaholics (like myself) would be interested in buying or swapping (good grade US Philippine) for it.
Enjoy and keep up the good work,

ps: I will keep in mind your offer for a swap if this thing appears what it is...........

Hi Rick, WOW! Never seen one like that before. Normally the mint mark is weak. Sometimes the 'M' just looks like a square blob. But I've never seen it missing completely. Here's what an average struck 1929 20c looks like:
And for another sign that this series is red hot, check out this Link. A nice mint state 1904 5c. Lots were minted. Lots were saved. Lots are available in this grade. A $75 coin tops.
