Proof Buffalo experts...Question

segojasegoja Posts: 6,141 ✭✭✭✭
Have a 36 Proof Buffalo graded PCGS PF66 Brilliant.

The coin is obviously brilliant, but has the reverse die characteristic of the satin proof.

It looks nothing like a satin finish, and exactly like a 37 surface

What is going on??? is this a transitional piece, brilliant or satin?

no pics, but trust me on the brilliant look and die characteristic.

Thanks in advance.

While there is no official documentation of such, I believe that there are actually three different types/finishes of 1936 Proof Buffalo Nickels as follows:

    1) Satin Proof (Type l)
    2) Brilliant Proof (Type 2)
    3) What I refer to as hybrid Proof - these are almost always found labeled/certified as "Brilliant Proof". However, although they clearly display some mirror-like reflectivity and greater flash than the Satin Proof coins, they are not as brilliant/reflective as the typical "Brilliant" Proof examples. Regardless of what you want to label them, I have seen many such (hybrid) coins.

    You have a muled coin.

    Brilliant and Satin.

Don't know if there is a price increase because of it, but I do not thik so.
