A+R 1853 half

what do you think? considering pulling the trigger but looking for a reason not to =P

image

edit: opinions on grade and reasonable price appreciated =)

Comments

  • Prices are all over the place with seated halves. The common looking ones get no respect at all and those with pizzazz pull a premium. It's probably a reasonable price for this halve. I'm not a fan of how NGC grades this series & the coins it puts in holders, but it appears to be graded fairly.
  • so.... i love the original look of the coin and dont mind paying well for coins i like... but is $450 ridiculous? too high? i dont mind overpaying, but dont want to be ripped.... if you follow me

edit: 10 day unconditional return policy

DLRC's return policy is good. If you want it, get it. Look for a nice strong strike and some luster remaining. I would be worried about an old cleaning which has since retoned but removed the luster. The only way to tell is to have it in your hand. I say go for it, worst case return it. You could also give them a call on Monday and have someone describe it...Mike

  • You would not be getting ripped at that price. I've got a favorite seller on ebay who specializes in seated halves who has both an AU-50 & AU53 NGC seated half in his store that are well above the price you mentioned. In fact, the '53 you are looking at is much better than his AU50. Some of my best Walkers came from DLRC and none of their pictures did real justice to what I recieved as all were better. You have nothing to lose if you want the coin as they do offer a return.
  • $450 is not too much for this.
Watch for the doubled die reverse varieties of 1853 Halves. These are sleepers.

  • thanks a lot. no negativity whatsoever.... so i just pulled the trigger. thanks for all the input, and i'll let you know how it looks in hand in 5 days or so.

sidenote: i put it on the parents credit card (after asking, of course =P) as an early christmas present.... so i just hope i love how it looks =) yes, yes, im a spoiled brat

I would not buy it if I were you...I think NGC's circ grading, especially the last year or so has been generous at best.

I bought this one raw and think it is graded right at XF45 by PCGS. It is super original and still cartwheels! I would wait for an honest to goodness XF.

  • if yours is a 45, that makes this one a gimme 50, right?

Dont know...the wear is more evident on mine since the fields are so dark. I would say the wear is equal and the luster is certainly equal...

    A nice, original XF coin.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • got the thing in the mail.... lots of luster, nearly mark free, smooth original surfaces.

the wear JUST makes the cut for AU, but the luster definitely puts it there (according to my opinion and that of my local dealer)

DLRC has treated me well once again =P

Nice original-lookin' coin. Probably has some hints of luster under the toning, that we ain't seein' in the pics.

I'm planning to put this on on the bay tomorrow just to ....OFF.... the thing.

    Didn't look CLOSELY enough. Glassed, but the problem is really ..... f a i n t.

There's grafitti under the original tone though.

Just wanna get it out at whatever someone bids (with full disclosure)

Gonna take the lumps and move on. VERY nice looking coin at a cursory (or even "moderate") inspection.

Edited to add that it is NOT in the field under the cap. It's on the left side and really concealed.

Edited again to answer what I "want" for it.

I have no frikkin idea. Gonna put it on ebay and tellem what's up and see if someone wants it. It would be a terrific "scam coin" and could be what the original seller did. I bought it for the originality and toning and general look of originality. It had that alright.
Maybe someone else would have the same idea.
I contacted the seller and advised that I would accept a loss if he just wanted to pay his ACQUISITION cost or even make an OFFER and got back a buncha stammering and mumbo jumbo.

Gonna take a loss no matter what. I'll link it when I get it up.

Grrrrrrr..... (many a tear has to fall.....but it's allllllll....in the game)

Edited yet AGAIN to curse the original grafitti-ist. He did such a lousy job and made it so faint that I can't even READ what he managed to get on the coin.

does it make the grade? any change of opinions?

edit: sorry i cant take very good pictures - at home using the parents camera....
  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,887 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yup. I would say it's a 50. No higher than that, but it's a dead-on 50, IMHO. Correctly graded. Nice.

Great coin. If I were gonna be nitpicky I would say I wanted to see a little more luster, but that would be... well, nitpicky. The nice original toning makes up for any shortfall in the luster arena.

Edit to add- if you say it cartwheels, then that's what I would look for. All the good stuff and luster, too. Yeah, baby.

  • great - got it at like 25 over bid, its right on for grade, and it cartwheels =P JUST makes the grade, imo, but that's what i paid for..... that and its original, and matches my collection....
  • Actually, I believe your pictures more than DLRC's. It appears to be a nice AU50 from what you added. I've bought some really nice walkers from them and their pictures do no justice to the coins with the lightening they seem to do. Here's an example.

A&R halves are very common in XF/AU. But a nice coin.

    Sorry Topstuff.......sleezebay strikes again.
