Howdy Bill. By altered on the quarter I did not mean tooled, added mintmark or anything like that; I was writing about the general surface color and "feel". The obverse is fairly blotchy, especially the portrait, and has the look of a coin that had stains removed from it while the reverse has a tint of salmon color on it that I find unattractive and that also looks like it is not original. The fact that it was dug likely explains the look.
