The gouges are most likely from getting stuck in a counting machine and someone used an ice pick to pry it out. The rubs are probably from poor storage over the years. Yes, it probably also circulated for a short time. image

That's a cool find. Recently I saw what was supposed to be a Jefferson on a Lincoln Planchet. Only it was at the flea market in a binder of 2X2's right next to a half finished spoon ring coin that was also labeled error. I figured the Jefferson on Lincoln planchet was fake. A friend of mine also went to the same flea market a couple of weeks later and he bought it for $8. It now resides in an NGC slab and he has recieved an offer of $600 for it, but he is keeping it. The same guy went to a coin show about 2 months ago and boughht a small plastic box full of circulated Buffalo Nickels for really cheap that a dealer was trying to get rid of. He found an18/7 D in there and sold it to a local coin shop for over $1000. I was at that coin shop today and the dealer was showing it off to everyone.

Ok... I'll ask here... How can you tell its not fake?

  • One easy way , without better pics, is to look at the lettering for weakness on the "bad" side...See how weak the "Quarter Dollar " is?....Did not get the full strike.
  • i.m.h.o .... it looks fake
