Lessons learned the hard way....

Hello, Being a new collector and registry participant I have purchased appx 75 slabbed coins in a short amount of time. Most of this post will deal mainly with wheaties or copper cents One of the great things about PCGS graded coins is the ability to purchase"sight unseen" with a reasonable assurance to the grade over the Internet and or mail(Images are not the same). Following will be some of my observations on copper slabbed coins for new collectors. A lot of sellers mention the supposed stricter grading standards on first generation holders and some of the COPPER cents may upgrade in the ms part but in my experience a even greater number will lose the Red designation. And apparently they are having to buy some of these coins back, So now they are grading a lot stricter on border line coins that would have been graded RED are now RED BROWN. So that seems to make buying copper cents with out actually seeing the coin a little riskier as we have one more variable. That would also seem to make true red coins much more valuable in the future. The other thing I would like to touch on is if you are buying coins for your registry set you may have to jump through some hoops if the last owner did not remove it from his set and you want to add it to yours, so you may want to ask if it is registered and if so will they delete it from their set. Take care folks! Mark McClary

Welcome! Do you have a link to your set?

Yes it is the my URL link, I have not figured out how to properly label it yet... The other thing I did not mention is how much work it is to catalog your acquisitions so you do not buy similar items before they arrive in the mail. I now have created my own system on paper at time of purchase as well as label each coin slab what I paid for it, when and who from. I personally am happy about the buy and sell rule here because all the coins that I upgraded from are all pcgs slabbed and on the other forum gets buried on the sixth page in a day. My goal is top thirty set in six months from start...Thank you all for your kind comments! Mark

    Welcome aboard.
I found a easy way of keeping track the coins as your building a set.
Go to the PCGS price guide for the coin your building a set of. Print it off and as you buy new coins circle what you got. This keeps you from getting to many dupes, and also gives you an idea of what there max, cost should be.
Online you should be able to get most of your coins for less than the price guide, until you hit the key dates or that POP top that you just have have.
