Doubling on 1893 Columbian halves--any info?

A friend of mine who is a recent convert to coin collecting has purchased an 1893 Columbian Half for his commem set. While examining the coin with a loupe he noticed that there was strong doublig of the date and some of the lettering. He checked the Bowers book, which I had previously lent to him, and could not find any information on this.
As someone who generally ignores such issues (commems, doubling, etc.), I could offer no help, but I promosed that I would post a note about it here. He does not have photographic capability, and the dealer from whom he had purchased the coin had not photographed it for inventory.
Any info would be appreciated. I know that there is a new reference on commems being published from Whitman, so I have hesitated to suggest that he buy any additional reference book at this time.
