seeking opinions on this no motto half eagle 1853P. NGC AU58

I like the look of it. Mintage is 305,770.
PCGS price guide says it runs 400 in AU. A whopping 1400 in MS60, and up from there.
Now the grade I do not agree with. I think it is a bit optimistic, but as usual, look for the luster.
I really like the long die crack on the obverse!

I know I would drop 350 without a thought on that coin. Retail for this coin in this sorta auction
is 625. I guess I would stretch a bit to 400 for that die crack on my "future" 1953P.

But 500? 600? I highly doubt I will do that.

What would you pay? What do you think of the coin?

edited to add: what is going on with the date?

    Nice die crack.

I do not make purchase decisions on the basis of photos for coins over $100.

the terms state i could return it for any reason within 10 days. nice place.

that CC above has a mint mark that is almost gone.
wait for better? after all, that is what i want to see!
  • FYI - DLRC is top notch. I have bought from them in the past and they accept returned coins with no questions asked. I was a little surprised that this return policy covered Auctions but I checked Terms and Conditions and it is clear that the 10 days is good on auctions too.

The real question will be what their "reserve" figure is. I bid on 4 coins on the last auction and all four coins did not achieve the reserve.

    Good Luck!!

Ironically, yesterday I passed on an all orig AU50 PGCS 1853 $5 ($275) that was essentially as nice as the one pictured above as an AU58. Instead of the 1853 I picked up a nice crusty 1852 in AU50 (green tagger) that I felt was closer to AU55. It set me back $255. I couldn't see paying an extra $20 for the 1853 when the coins seemed identical in rarity, but only the CDN differed. This was the first NM $5 I had ever purchased.

    roadrunner,

1852P is a slightly easier "get" with a mintage of 573,901.
    I also own one, PCGS AU55. I paid 313 which included s/h/i.

You got offered wholesale prices. Any with die cracks though image

edited to add: well, what seems to me, essentially wholesale, "ebay type prices".

    ryk,

i would like a bolder mint mark than that. I would wait for better.
100 or 200 dollars more might score substantially more coin?

The market is so biased against NGC gold coins that it isn't worth risking you money on them. Also. I have found Davis Lawrence nor to be the low price leader, I have always been able to find better prices elsewhere. They are a fine honest dealer if you want to pay their prices.

    gat,

i totally agree with your statement, but if that includes ebay,
one bad deal ruins your whole percentage money wise.

i prefer good customer service and good pictures. plus
the site seems to cater to me. slightly tougher coins
    in conditions i like.

Trends in F12 is $600, not much more. Though for a coin like this, I'm not sure you could actually find one in F12 very easily. Heritage sold a F12 for $460 last December. I think I would rather have that one image
