**Winners announced!!** Better Late than never!!! 2K post giveaway!!!!

And the winners are:

djluster - Is the winner of the MS64 Morgan
atarian - 3 proof sets : 1983,1984,1985
rabbitracks - 2 blue envelope IKE's

Thank you for all the participants....took the kids a little longer than I had guessed.

Well, I just hit my 2000th post today. I would have to say that in the past year that I have been here I have learned at least 2 new things every week. I have learned about coins that I have never had an interest in. I am really into Mograns and Lincoln's and have leaned a lot about vam's, rpm's, machine doubling, etc.....

Anyway....enough of that. Onto the giveaway!!!

Here's the deal:

Entrants must describe what they collect. Doesn't have to be a book but, answering "dimes" isn't gonna cut it.

My son and daughter are going to be doing the decisions on the 3 winners. So, KEEP IT CLEAN please. On Friday 25th of November, they will pick the winners and they will be announced on Saturday @10am PST...

Prizes are as follows:

1st place will win an MS64 Slabbed Morgan

2nd place will win 3 proof sets : 1983,1984,1985

3rd place will win 2 blue envelope IKE's

Have fun!!!!!

  • I collect Morgans. After joining this forum, I delved the various denominations hoarding, only to find myself back to collecting the coins the got me started collecting in the first place...Morgans. It's too darn expensive this coin stuff, so I'll stick with dollars.image Thanks for the chance.

I like big coins, I like old ,big coins, I collect old copper pennies. They are called cents. I have one from 1793, the first year any coins were made for the usa. I also have one from 1799, the year George Washington died. I also have one from 1804 and 1805 when Lewis and Clark went to explore. I love old coins like this. that it what I collect. I learn a lot to.

I collect several different series, but my first and primary love is the morgan dollar- the designs on the morgan seem very regal and distinguished to me, and the collecting options with beautiful toning and prooflike fields seem limited only by one's imagination. And I start to see a tapestry being built when my collection is placed together, a tapestry that offers a mirrored reflection of part of my soul........... image

I collect whatever strikes my fancy for the moment. I'm missing 2 fairly common Peace Dollars from a MS63/64 set and may start into the VAM's just for a little frustration.image

I started as a kid of 7-8 with circulated Indian Head Cents, my Dad had been given several dozen rolls by his Dad, and I got to go through them with my dad.

I've put together and then sold several complete non-gold type sets, the best was XF/AU.

I just like coins in general... I like holding a piece of history.
  • I just started collecting Buffalo nickels & Morgan dollars. I inherited a collection
from my family and without this forum a know i would have made many mistakes.
I recently sent some coins off to PCGS, sent in 8, 6 came back graded with only 2
in body bags, not bad i thought.

Thanks for your consideration and the chance image

Congrats and thanks for the opportunity!

I collect whatever catches my eye, lately it has been Indian Head's and Buffalo's, but will pick up anything that I really like (for example, this week's purchases were a Peace Dollar, Walker, and Texas Comm.).

Usually it has to have that little extra "something" that makes it stand out for me.
  • Ive been collecting coins since i was able to walk . mostly 41 nickels back in the day . then moved to wheat pennies. then did random things for a while. Now that i have a job and money after car bills phone bills and insurence. ( oh yeah gas on the monte ss. $40 every 3 days). I picked Gold coins.

Now i know you said "dimes " wouldnt cut it like that. but i dont do one type of gold coins. i do them all ( or trying to). so far ive managed to get a hold of $2.50 $5 $10 gold coins but i have a desire for $1 $3$20 also.

now to the reason why i collect gold coins

I like coins with nice warm colors.
I always liked history in school so having Gold Coins from the 1900s and 1800s kinda brings me in toe with what it was like in the US at that time.
Someday i hope to own a CAL coin . another part of history
Plus Collecting gold coins actually gives me a sense of feeling complete. I found that collecting nitch that makes me feel happy. I love looking at them either what i own or whats out there. and since im young ( only 22) i hope to gather more and more till have a nice full collection of coins.

many people try to do type set of gold coins either liberties or indians. but me i touch back to my roots with the nickels and wheaties. i want to put all the gold coins together . a far fetched goal but its a goal that will keep me busy a lifetime and put me in touch with yesteryear and also from dealers hearing about history.

    Edited to add:

Outside of my coins i collect the following:

Classic Video games ( from Maganvox Odyssey 1 (1972) - Xbox 360 (2005) i own at least one of just about every system ever made in america and across the seas. (ie. australia, Germany, japan, tiwan, france, and brazil to list a few). I have the only one known for the atari 8-bit computer ( Mogul Manaic) only one cart known to exist .

I have most of the Nintendo Power Mags ever from 1 - 198 ( Dec 05). all im missing is 2-19 and 105-145. thats all i have all others including #1.

I have all Atari Age mags (10 in all) from 1982 and 83.( into 84).

I started collecting Old computers since ihave just baout everything to do with vintage gaming.

I dabble in hotwheels a little. but not really too much. I have a played with 41 Woodie that is valued at $2900 unopened so i dont know the current value for an opened one.

And the topper that i like best my 1970s Bright orange Panasonic 9 inch B/W tv. ( gotta love retro orange. )

  • I collect the cheapest way I can, that is from my pocket. I collect all
over the world, I like U.S., Canada and Australians but I'll take
    anything.

Searching through my pockets for old coins is great, friends and
cashiers I know let me pay face value for what they find and hold for
me. Here's my two most find LINK.
I'm still like a kid when I get a wheat penny in my change.

Congrats on your 2000th post and all those great pictures you've
    posted about coins.

I have a few active collections going:

    Bullion:
Australian Silver Lunar series, Australian Silver Kookaburras, Chinese Silver Pandas, ASEs

    Registry Sets:
    100% complete Ikes w/varieties
    90% complete Kennedy Proof set

My favorite current set is the Dansco 7070 Type Album. It's about 50% complete with endless upgrade potential.

  • I collect what I like. I favor big silver coins such as Morgans and Walkers. I also like to build year sets for years that have sentimental value to me, or just are interesting. These year sets could be extended into a type set, but I don't have enough of them yet.

    I collect:

    Ungraded
US Mint sets (in original mint packaging)
US Proof sets (in original maint packaging)
Business strike Silver Eagles (unopened rolls)
    Proof Silver Eagles
    Busines Strike Gold Eagles
    Proof Gold Eagles

    graded
    Morgan Dollars
    Peace Dollars
    Ike Circulation strike Dollars
    Ike Proof Dollars
    SBA Circulation Strike Dollars
    SBA Proof Strike Dollars
    SAC Circulation Strike Dollars
    SAC Proof Strike Dollars
    Circulation Strike Gold Dollars
    Walking Liberty 1/2 Dollars

  • right now I will buy anything that I an afford and that covers everything from Proof Lincoln cents to AU Peace Dollars. Nothing special and nothing fancy. With "LIBERTY" you just can't go wrong.
  • Thanks for the chance and this is a great idea for a give away thread. I like reading about what other board members collect.

At the moment I have three serious goals:

Certified 20th Century Type Set. I will accept properly graded and original coins in PCGS, NGC and ANACS plastic. All coins must be a minimum of MS63. The Barber Half and Quarter will probably kill me.

PCGS certified 1979 U.S. Mint Set. All coins will be in the penultimate grade (the top pops are far too over priced and in my opinion the coins are barely distinguishable from their one point lower counterparts).

PCGS certified 1979 U.S. Proof Set in PR70 DCAM. This will take quite a long time as I intend to include both Type One and Type Two coins.

To satisfy my coin jones while I save up for the major purchases required for my "core" collection I buy 1979 dated silver world coins in both proof and mint state. Anything that catches my eye will do. There are a multitude of beautiful coins out there, so I will always be entertained. Here are a couple of examples:

I mostly collect Kennedy half dollars. I also just started "accumulating" Ike's with the varieties that I pick up for almost face value. I have a 20th century type set for looks, silver proof and Unc Eagles, and the usual gold, silver, etc. Thanks for the chance! Ray

  • Proof sets are what I've been collecting. Proof sets and Franklin half dollars. I have a 'Frankie' from '56, my birthyear and several proof sets from the 50's on. I'm not much of a hardcore collector but I do enjoy holding in my hand a bit of history.
Thank you for the giveaway chance.

  • Congrats on 2K !

    thanks for the chance.

I collect whatever strikes my fancy, can't decide which series I like best, I like them all, however my core collection consistes of PCGS morgans, within the morgan collection I concentrate on1921s. I'm putting together a slabbed grading set of 21's from all three mints and I'm filling a dansco with raw 21 VAMs. Speaking of VAMs, I also collect ANACS low mint state top 100 and hot 50 VAMs.

ASE.... I have a Dansco filled and a PCGS MS69 set 86-------->05, need to work on a 69 PF set. I'm also working a second Dansco for toned ASE, both NT and AT eagles.

Working on a Type set Dansco, the Ike Dansco is complete as is the Sacagawea (I think)

Uncirculated and Proof mint set are being worked on, both silver and clad.

Gold I pick up whenever the mood hits me, I have a little bit of everything, from $1 to GAE, nothing fancy but it's gold, I like it.
Oh yea , I'm a sucker for mint products, have plenty of that stuff.

and finally, because I like showing off, this is the latest addition to my VAM dansco,

  • 1- working on my type set
2 - looking to upgrade my birth year mint set ('63)
3 - working on putting together a lincoln memorial off-center cent collection
4 - looking to upgrade my washington set

    side notes:
5 - I'm a lighthouse freak, and love the history that goes along with them. I have many lighthouse replicas to recall my visits (i've seen 45-ish)
6- I collect Disney dollars, I'm 80% complete on 1 from every year of their issue.
My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!
  • Thanks for the chance and congrats on the 2000
Several months ago I was cleaning out an estate and found an 84s morgan, looked it up and got hooked. After a few months I ran into a nice 54 proof set (tnx tomb) and was awed by the frankies so I guess I have two major collections going. Oh and I am also working on my type set but that is going slow. Of course we have a set of state quarters going also but that is more my son.

My collecting interests have always changed and morphed and it seemed to have no focus until I realized that I'm interested in coins with a certain look. So that is what I collect, coins with a certain look. And that look is whatever makes me want to look at the coin over and over. Maybe it's a beat up AG-3 or a superb MS-67 but all my coins have a look that keeps me coming back to look at them.
  • I started collecting in 1998. I am working on a certified US type set. My eventual dream is to have it be all keys and semi-keys if possible. As a result a few of the type coins in my set are lower grade such as the 1926-s VF-25 Buffalo, 1914 VG-10 Barber half, and a 1921 VF-20 mercury. I have always been drawn towards rarity over grade given the same price. So, I have an excel spreadsheet that lists all the coins I need in my dream type set, and every time a I have a little money I go looking for a coin to fill a spot. I really enjoy doing this because I think collecting a series would make me lose interest, so type collecting is ideal for me. Attached is my current favorite.image
  • Just started a Gold type set (great timing there, huh?). Also collecting with my kids:

    My daughter, 10, Franklins's
    My son, 13, Kennedy's

We also have proof sets for everyone in the family for our birth year.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Wow what a great giveaway thread. The members of this board collect some very nice coins. As a young man (40 years ago) I started to collect Lincoln cents. Always on the lookout for one better coin to go in my books. I still have most of those coins in either my book or the set I have started for my grandson. Lincoln cents are a good starting spot for todays youth and as I have been told I never grew upimage I still love them..

I also collect old Carnival glass.
        Zippo lighters.
          Harley Davidson everything.

I collect gold coins, when I can, older coins from the 1800's when I can afford it.

Like when I was a kid, I still collect and ENJOY filling holes in my albums from pocket change. I always looked though my mom and dad's change, when young, for coins to fill my albums. Now I look at my own change and my KIDS change too! And enjoy that simple way of collecting.

I love it all. Rolls of circs and MS, complete high-grade circ Buff set, two raw sets of MS Jeffs, three of the top 20 PCGS Jeff proof sets, one of the best PCGS SMS sets and all manner of other coins. I love them all. And, I particularly delight in scoring nice raw coins for a few bucks and earning mega grades at PCGS. I have sold very little, finding it hard to part with coins. A great hobby, eh? Thanks!

Although I collected Lincoln cents for many years (25+), I once had a fantasy of finding a suitcase full of mint state buffalo nickels. I won't go into details, but it suddenly occured to me that I was now in the finacial position to pursue my life long love of Buffalo nickels without going broke.

          The rest is history.

I collect common date morgan dollars with Exceptional eye appeal! I love them dripping with color and luster. Proof like feilds also are a major plus. Though...In all honesty, some of the more simply toned morgans are the best. Here is my favorite! The color makes this coin unique and appealing to the eye...without it, another simple white morgan.

          image

Most recently, I have also started a PCGS type set. Other than that, I simply buy coins that appeal to me and are different.

          Thanks for the chance!

I sure love Buffalo nickels. If one came to life, I'd marry one--after asking my wife if she were willing to share me with ole' Chief IronTail.
I have all of the common dates and several of the intermediate ones. It's very challenging to find high-AU or UNC examples in some years and dates. It's a lot of fun because there is so much variety within the series, and so many aspects of the nickels of themselves one must know intimately and weigh into the decision making.

I also like older proof sets, that is from 1950-59.

But the Buffalo nickels rock the most!

        • Minimalist design type coin set!! Perhaps the ultimate in type sets, squeezing type designs into its smallest parts. An example or two are in order:
The Barber design is nearly identical in dime, quarter, half dollar. One coin will suffice of these three. The nickel IS quite different and deserves its own spot! Six seated liberty denominations-choose one of them for the design type! The trade dollar is seated but is completely different, so it deseves its own spot.
This truly keeps costs down, but serves to have a complete design representation. See link below for a fuller description.

          Hi, thanks for the giveaway.......

I am currently working on a Dansco type set without the gold, and collecting whatever nice toners I can find(dark or light). Thinking I am wanting to get into proof Jeffersons as well.

Okay now for the obligatory sucking-up to the kids........

Kids, I hope Santa Clause brings you everything on your wishlists this and then some. Face it, your great kids and you deserve it.

        • Well...I was into capped bust halves for a while. I still like them, but I've moved on to something a little easier. Right now, I'm using the PCGS Registry's Basic U.S. Coin Design Set (No gold) as my collecting guide. It will take me a while, but I'm well on my way.

          Thanks for the opportunity!

I collect Kennedy halves - I am four coins away from finishing a Dansco and I can't bring myself to pay the money for the 1995 and 1997 silver proofs just yet!

I have just started on Jefferson nickels too and I would like to put a set together just from circulation coins, if I search hard enough I know I'll find that 1950 D!

I originally collected the classics(Lincolns, Jeffersons, etc.) I am now putting together a set of PCGS set of Morgans dollars with one coin of each grade P01-MS67. The P01 and F12 are proving to be a challenge. I am also branching out into seated coinage.

        • I am new back in the hobby, i used to collect with my dad but he past away from cancer and i stop collecting because it reminded me to much of him, but I missed collecting coin right now i mainly collect state quarters I currenty have on going for my 3 kid, my wife and me and that is fun but since they only come out ever 4 months or so i deside to do something else as well. i really like to the mercury dime so i am currently collecting them i Started the set about 2 month ago and i am down to needed 13 more. I am on a very limited buget but really liek to collect all use coins
so my top three thing i collect are:

The focus of my collecting is on the indian $5's and $10's but...resisting a proof Silver American Eagle or a new silver proof set is futile for me. The mint issues like the Marine this year and the nickles from the last two years are must haves. It is just too much fun. Here's a couple of pics of my favorite coin:

I collect draped bust half dollars, by major variety, in circulated grades. I love these 200 or so year old coins, that worked for the United States when the country was young. The coins are artistic as well as historic, the dies were hand-made by craftsmen, and the coins were struck on a manual screw-press by tradesmen. The coins did their duty in commerce, and changed hands hundreds of times each. Who can imagine all the different people who held these coins?

        • My daughter and I enjoy collecting together just for the fun of it. She's 11. We collect a little bit of everything from Wheat pennies to Morgan Dollars. Every week we have a certain amount we can spend on coins. We have a blast going to shops and digging through the bargain boxes, buying pennies buy the bag full and searching through them. She puts them in holders and writes down everything she has and stores them away. Kids grow up fast and as a middle aged dad with only one child, it's a blessing that something so simple gives me time with my daughter that could have easily been spent playing video games or watching tv. I wouldn't trade our new hobby for anything. Thanks, John and Danica in Alabama.

        • Personally, I like collecting coins because they're tangible history, history you can hold in your hands. Every coin has a story behind it: what the designs mean, what the value of the coin was, why it was made out of the metal it was, why it is or isn't in good shape, etc. Finding out the stories behind a coin can be just as much fun as finding the coins themselves. For world coins in particular I also like looking at the designs themselves, since they represent something unique to the country: a person, an event, a plant, animal, or official seal. The hobby itself is fun because it can be as cheap or expensive, as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. You can also tailor it to your tastes as far as what kinds of coins you collect. At the present I lean towards early Commem's,
          Philippine-American and even Staehood quarters.

        • I collect toned Morgans, American Silver Eagles, Mexican Libertad Proofs and high grade quarters...I love the hobby and hope to pass on my hobby and collection to my son. Thanks for the chance. Happy Thanksgiving!!! image

        • eyoung, congrats on your 2000th post. I'm a coin collector at heart love collecting all types, have complete sets of Lincoln Cents, Roosevelt dimes, Kennedy half dollars, Jefferson nickels, Washington quaters State Issues,Franklin half dollars, Susan B dollars all in collector books. My main focus at present is my Lincoln Cent Registry sets which is my real PASSION. I have accumulated many of the registry pieces on my own by going through many original rolls and through e-bay purchase, from dealers inventory across AMERICA through my travels as an Over the road Trucker. It is a enjoyable position at times, when I've had the opportunity to see and enjoy many places in USA and Canada that I could never possibly have done at a permanent position at home. We as a nation (USA) have been truly blessed as a nation with the many WONDERS that this great country has to offer in visual beauty that no other country can even come close to matching. Thanks for the opportunity for your giveaway. Mikeimage
