Try Lyman Allen's 2005 US/Philippine Coins (for prices), Jeff Springsteen's 1994's U.S. Administration Coinage for the Philippines, Aldo Basso's 1968 & 1975 Coins, Medals and Tokens of the Philippines & Neil Shafer's 1961 U.S. Territorial Coinage for the Philippine Islands.

FilamCoins list pretty well covers it. Of course the Red Book also has a section about US-Philippines coins.

There is also "Piloncitos to Pesos" by A. Legarda but the books listed by Filamcoins and USAROK hold the most information.
You can order copies of Aldo Basso's Medals and Tokens of the Philippines & Neil Shafer's 1961 U.S. Territorial Coinage for the Philippine Islands from the BNSP (Bank Notes Society of the Philippines). Look for Carmen, email address: bnsp@pacific.net.ph. / telefax no.: (632) 400-69-57 / cellphone no. (63) 919- 853-31-32.

Thanks everyone for the info......just bought the 1936 3 coin set last night. Although you can tell they sat at the bottom of the bay for a while, I could not pass them up with those mintages

  • Hi Rick:

Mr. Filam nailed the best sources of info. For the broad overview, the Aldo Basso book is still far and away the best. If you ever get to the Philippines and start looking up the dealers, you'll soon see that they refer constantly to the book even though it's about 30 years out of date.

Neil Shafer's book is a close second for the broad overview; very interesting reading with good insights into the series.

Both books are out of print. Mr. Tai No Henka points out that the Bank Note Society of the Philippines has reprinted the Basso book. Still it's a rotten copy, hard to read, and the pictures miserable. I love BNSP, but still I'd recommend going to one of the many on-line search services and picking up one of the original copies, and also a copy of the Shafer book.

The Springsteen book, which discussed the comparity rarity of the coins, was of enormous value to me when I started collecting the series in 1997 or 98. But by now, it's hopelessly outdated and misleading as the PCGS and NGC pop reports show the reality of which coins are rare and which aren't.

The Lyman Allen book is interesting primarily for his listing of the varieties. Here, the listing is idiosyncratic, i.e., he lists some minor, minor varieties while ignoring important ones. Still, it's the best listing of the varieties until someone comes along and does a better one.

If you're buying these coins in circulated condition, I think his prices are realistic. But in the higher grades -- and I've been a major buyer of these coins for almost a decade now -- I think his prices bear little to no relationship to the real market prices. They're way too low.

"Piloncitos to Pesos" is, in my opinion, more of a fluff book than a real effort to get to the nitty-gritty. I'm a coinaholic regarding the US-Philippine series, but this book put even me to sleep.

I hope this helps and, in any case, welcome to the clan.

    Warm regards,
