Your opinion on a 1910-D $10 gold?

See pics below. There are higher def TIF links under the pics.

There seems to be a scratch on her cheek, and a ding on the jaw bone.

The eagle seems less well defined (weaker strike?), except in the tail, where there's a nick.

Are you specializing in 10-D $10's?

As they say in finance, 1 data point does not a trend make... image

This being said, I thought it might be a good idea to get 3 or 4 of various grades to learn to study coins, keeping everything I can fixed except the grade.

Clean as in good, or clean as in cleaned?

Clean as in good and nice. Sorry for the confusion!

  • That one looks pretty good to me.

Gold is harder to judge by photo than some other metals it seems to me. When I photograph gold many minor things don't show up if you tilt the coin or move the light slightly. So it is easier to hide things if you try.

I like your idea of learning as much about 1910-D Eagles as possible. It might be a bit expensive to put together a grading set but it sure would be educational.

Yeah, based on what I've read, I should be able to at least recoup my monney, but I won't make any major profit.

What grade do you think it would get to? MS63?

  • I'm not good at grading gold from photos. I couldn't tell if there was a rub unless I had the coin in hand. Assuming Mint State I'd go anywhere from 62 to 64 so 63 would be a good guess. image

It's in an NNC slab at MS-64 on eBay and the bidding is now at $608.

  • I would guess MS63 from the photos, but now that you mention NNC I'll go AU58 or improperly cleaned.

There really is no way to tell the grade with a scan. You are hard pressed even if it's a photo but scans are worse. It "looks" nice but.... ???

I'm not taking any bet at that price anyway.

NNC, eh. That looks like a AU coin to me.

If your intent is to get a grading set, stick with one grading company (and not NNC!)....Mike
