Dumb question: Do PSA holders give any UV protection?

I have some PSA/DNA slabbed cards on display. Most of my display items (autographed baseballs, photo's and prints) are behind UV protective glass. Do the holders give any protection against damage from light?

  • Raymond,

This is not a dumb question!

And, unfortunately, the answer to your question is no. The holders should always be stored inside a container of some type and 100% out of the light. I have personally seen many friends' cards that were kept in display cases get badly discolored by exposure to light. I'm not talking about sunlight but normal room light. It happens so slowly, they didn't realize what had taken place until the damage was done.

I can also say without a doubt that the answer is 'no'. I had a PSA 6 '70 OJ Simpson sitting on the dashboard of my truck for about a year, and it faded so bad that they orange border around the picture is now a flat grey.
  • Cards will fade merely from room light? that seems odd, I thought the fading was the result of ultra violet rays.....that's frightening, b/c my collection's been in a display case for a while. It's been so long since i've added any new cards, I probably haven't even looked at it in a year. Well....guess i'm off to check...cross your fingers.

On another note, if you have any cards graded by USA....I remember they used to advertise their cases were uv protected!

i wish there was an option at least...

Like for a dollar more you get UV protection.

This its one improvement on the holder that would be a great marketing tool and probably not too expensive to do.

  • Perhaps Oakley will start grading cards . . . Just a thought.
  • our go to walmart and buy yourself some window tint do-it-yourself kit with a roll of that tinting plastic, and tint your slabs. that will keep the UV out! image
