complete after 10 years and johnny bench hit on my girlfriend

image

I started this pic in 1996 and added the final autographs this weekend at the 30 year reunion of the big red machine. what a great trip it was too. I went down to Cincy overnight, stayed in the same hotel with the Bengals. They were all great about signing too even though I didnt approach them because I found it rude to do so while they are eating (even though others had no problem). While getting the bench sig, he glanced up and saw my girlfriend with me, he stopped signing to tell her how nice she looked and then halted the line another 45-60 seconds to inquire about other plans for the trip (the whole time talking to her and not even noticing me). I was in shock about the whole thing and teased her about getting his number.

Years ago when I worked in the front office for a major league team there were many rumors going around that he was..um..shall we say......not liking the ladies all that much! Well it sounds like that might be one rumor we can put to rest.

By the way....Very cool picture. I am jeolous!
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

I hope that isnt true. I had never heard this until now, so like everything else i googled it. alot of folks say this. It is just hard to think that one of the greats could be. but if so it brings about a whole new line of pitcher and catcher jokes.

Since this got off topic and started to change direction, I want to throw this in...

ranger63 - Would it change your opinion of Johnny Bench if that stuff you read was true? Would you be disappointed? Would his statistical accomplishments be diminished in your mind?

Your initial reaction indicates an (not to be disrespectful to you) ignorant response, "I hope that isnt true", when in fact, it should not matter one way or another to you or anyone else what Johnny Bench or anyone else does in their private life. And if he is gay, so be it, he had no choice in the matter, except to not reveal it to the public.

There are plenty of other Johnny Bench's in the world of professional sports, swirling in rumors, many of which are likely true. There undoubtedly are others who are gay, who have been spared the rumors, but have managed to keep their private lives private. Ignorance rules when it comes to this subject, all you have to do is look at the recent constitutional amendments the far-right zealots have successfully been selling. Homosexuals as a group will never be able to compete with the religious organizations touting this stuff because they are too few in number, which means there will never be enough funds to compete. Until the amendmends are abolished for being unconstitutional (which I figure will happen within 10-15 years), and people accept others are equals regardless of their sexuality, ignorance will continue to dominate.
  • I commend your diligence to finish the picture....it's going to look awesome framed. While not nearly of the same magnitude I had a similar experience. 2 years ago I bought a UConn mini helmet to get signed when the team stepped up to division 1....the freaking thing sat unsigned for 18 months. The irony was, I had to go to saints training camp in metairie La. to get two signatures, and then got the rest I was looking for when the team was in atlanta this past fall. 2 years and several thousand miles later, I finally got the helmet signed....but I'm still missing one sig that I wanted. What a hassle, but it makes for good conversation.

  • From the archives . . . Bench was hitting on ME in this photo. He asked me how I thought he'd look wearing nothing but the turquoise bolo tie.

No, great guy. Visited for about 20 minutes at Bush inauguration festivities at Union Station in D.C. Never thought to ask for an autograph!

First let me just say that just becaues you say no disrespect does not take from the terribly disrespectful statement that followed.

If Bench is in fact gay, it certainly does not take from his accomplishments. He was still a great ball player and an even better guy. All I meant with my statement was that I grew up protending to be Johnny Bench on the field and idolizing him as did many people with their own fathers. How would those people feel if they came home for thanksgiving and dad said he was gay. A little dissapointed probably. Not because gay is some horrible thing, just not the norm.

To put me in a group with the politicians who are crusading against homosexuality was the disrespect. A person can be opposed to the idea of homosexuality without being hateful to those practicing.

No harm intended in my post, I apologize for offending. I was not specifically referring to any one individual in the second part of the post, just the large portion of the population who have no understanding of human sexuality, and how they are easily swayed by the huge religious groups who are pushing their agenda on politics and getting their way. Again, I do apologize. Josh

Catchers can't be gay - it's against the rules.

    Some clarifications are needed.

    1. Bigger scan of the picture.
    2. Scan of Rangers GF.
    3. Meathook are you one Bench's right or left?

With the answers to these three items I think we can safely figure out Bench's preferences. image

Congrats are in order to Ranger for sticking with it for 10yrs. Well done.

LUCKY!!!! I Wish I Came Home To Something Like That Every Night
  • Meathook is on the left, Mrs. Meathook on the right.

    Bench claimed to be bi-curious.

As you can see from the photo, Bench was awfully cuddly that evening!
  • That photo is fantastic! Just awesome. Congratulations on maintaining your vision of completing that thing...no easy task, I'm sure.
That photo is a WOW signed or not.

Even if Johnny Bench WAS gay, he wouldn't be after looking at your girlfriend!

Growing up I loved the Reds and, of course have great memories if the Big Red Machine of the mid-70s. Look at that photo: Bench, Perez, Morgan, Concepcion (sp?), Rose, Foster, Griffey & Geronimo. Through in Don Gullett on the mound and it is a wonder they ever lost.

Given the choice I'd rather be the pitcher.

Notice that in the photo Bench is the only one squatting. A true catcher till the end.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

My greatest live Phillies moment was in the '70s. 13 or 15 innings and Bench ends it with an HR. He hit at least two that night, maybe three.
