VAM collectors hypothetical.....

Let's say you ran across an entire roll (20 coins) of Morgan scarface's.... or Peace $ tail on the "O"'s in MS-62 - MS-64.... Besides jumping up and down for hours on end, what would you do with them to try to keep current prices from being affected while still enjoying the fruits of your labor.... As some of us know, even 5-10 mint state examples placed into the market at the same time can send a current VAM's price to it's death... Good example on the Peace $ VAM side is the 1934-D VAM 4....

I know what'd I do, but I'm curious to hear from other VAMMER's.....

I would hold them and sell them one at a time. Depending on the coin, I might sell one coin every six months or something like that.

I would do the same... sell 1-2 per year, starting with the worst ones first.

Even a whole roll of Scarfaces would be easily absorbed by the market.
    When in doubt, don't.

Interesting thread. I too would sell them off slowly. I would have each coin individually certified by PCGS to ensure maximum sale price.

Dennis writes selling off the lower grades first. This is interesting and I'm curious about the logic behind this theory. Dennis, could you elaborate?

An entire roll of scarface's would be neat intact but I would do as others have mentioned, sell one every so often. image

My theory is the market is so hungry for things like Scarfaces that even lower grade coins would be immediate sellers at prices I believe would challenge previous MS62 (the typical grade seen for Scarfaces) prices. Wih a strong price "floor" established by lower grade coins, higher prices would likely result for higher grade coins if/when they came onto the market.

The best handful would never make it to the market, of course, since I would keep them. image

By the way, are you aware that an entire roll of Scarfaces actually did exist at one time? A very well-known VAM collector out here in southern California had them about 20 years ago and sold them for $100-$130 each. (Now where did I put that time machine?)
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I'd wait for the demand to pick-up and wait until the market could absorb them ALL... THEN certifiy one by one so not to push the pops up too quickly. I'd sell the worst coins first as well and most likely sit on the remaining 10 until REALLY crazy money showed up......
  • I had a roll of 1883 O/O VAM-4 coins at one point. I was lucky enough to purchase them near common price sught unseen and the roll turned out to be pretty nice to boot (61-63 kinda coins, mostly 62s). I certified the nicest and sold them when the opportunity arose. It was a slow release like others have been proposed. Less planned than maket driven. These are not nearly as rare as a scarface, but I still did well. I have a couple of the baggiest left. If these coins were a major rarity, I certinaly would have been selling them in inverse condition order... worst goes first, best sells last.

Peaceman, can you elaborate on what happened with the '34-D VAM 4's? Was a horde unleashed? What are prices running these days?

I recently sniped an AU-BU VAM 4 and am mildly curious about current market values!

Thanks, Peaceman. Wasn't that TonedPeaceNut with the VAM 4 score? Pretty cool....
