Home Metal Detecting

Managed 5.7grams of gold today...

...I dug this full stater on one of my better fields, along with 7 Roman bronze grots.

I've yet to ID it properly, but it weighs in at 5.7grams.

    Outstanding!!!!

How rare finds are ancient gold coins compared to other (lesser) metals? Weren't they quite valuable coins that only people in prominent positions would be expected to carry? What products/services would a coin like this buy in its day? A horse maybe?
(I immediately admit that my knowledge about ancients is embarrasingly pathetic at best).

I know enough to be green with envy though! image

  • More info. on this awesome coin please! Do you dig your ancient wonders and Middle Age silvers and just pinch yourself with disbelief? I would. I live in Washington state, dug a 1962 dime a couple weeks ago, and was stoked. You'd probably (a) throw it back or (b) spend it. Keep digging and posting, thanks.
