Fairly clever PayPal scam

This one had me going for a little bit. Since I switched over to Comcast, I usually check my email through their online checker - that way when spam finds its way through their filter, I can report it as spam before I download it onto my computer via Outlook Express.

Anyway, this notice appears titled, "Notice: Payment has been sent - 190.85 USD" from sender "PayPal". Here's the body:

My first thought was that, "oh great, what did my wife buy now?" (A small aside, that thought never crosses my mind when I'm using PP for my card addiction! image ) Then I checked it against the notes that PP sends me after I've sent money - in every one of those notes, I am addressed by name. All in all, definitely a scam. I checked my PP account and no such transaction is logged against me. The obvious intent is to get someone to click the "disput this transaction" link. If you follow the link, it takes you to a PP knockoff page, but the URL is completely screwy.

A legit email would always address you by name instead of "Dear Paypal member"

agreed - that's one of the first things I noticed. Just wanted to get this out there in case anyone else got one of these.

  • I got the same message last week. Funny thing was it was addressed to me. I logged in and checked but there was no such transaction. Kinda scary!

    Yep,
As always, I never even read past the salutation.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Personally I am sorta p.o.'d at Ebay and Paypal for letting these spoofs go on. I know these things rarely catch users like us, but newbies are going to bite on it hook line and sinker.

Since these scum are using their trademarks, they should be fighting it like crazy. Instead I get the feeling they really don't care.

There's not much eBay and PayPal can do about those scam scumbags. Nearly all of them come from Eastern European countries where we can't touch them. If by chance they do get some heat it's so easy to move on and start again. It's no secret that crime is the biggest growth industry in the world right now.

As always, education is the best alternative.

Wouldn't have fooled me because of my familiarity with these scams, but I must admit that is a good scam. They are gonna rope in some people on this one. These f'ing scammers get more clever and more devious all the time. The only solution is throwing them in jail by getting governments worldwide to cooperate in arresting and prosecuting these criminals.

Wow - I got the same thing with the same buyer as Derek Boyd in Beverly Hills. Since that's where I live, I figured the scam was smarter than usual, but apparently that address goes out to everyone. Of course, the tip off is the zip code....image

  • If my wife bought a "Rolex" for $170, we'd have much larger fish to fry than the email scam. What was she thinking???????????
  • I got that same message about a month ago, and I have to admit I was worried that someone jacked my Paypal account, but then I realized that I ddidn't have any money in my Paypal account so I couldn't have paid for a piece of gum let alone a fake Rolex. Actually, Paypal itself is a scam and I haven't used it in over a year. I just use check or money order.

  • It's strange.

I have two paypal accounts. One of them gets a ton of spoof emails (this one included). I get them literally every few days. My other accounts gets them very rarely (once every 6 months).

The only difference is, my first account uses the same email address as my ebay account. Hmmmmm. Just a coincidence?

    Has anyone else noticed this?
