1857-O Dime Attribution Help Needed

Just hit the BIN on this 1857-O Dime. Seller guarantee's it's a BREEN-3306, thin date/medium O variety. I know it's a small pic, can't help it (sellers pic). Can our resident Dime experts help me out on this one. Appreciate It!image

My gut feel would be yes as the Lg O is pretty much the same size as the lettering around the reverse legends. Still, they are fairly close that I could be wrong.

In any case the med O is not a rarity by any means and can be found quite easily unattributed in all grades. I would never pay a premium for one....others might.

It does look like a medium "O".

See http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/ if you haven't already.

  • Its a little hard to tell about the date from the pic, but the numbers appear to be thin, If the loop of the 5 is away from (not touching) the cusp of the 5 then it is right. the o Mint mark in the pic is a medium.

What did the seller say about the coin being harshly cleaned ?

2bits here is the sellers description of the coin:

Lovely original coin with light gold toning and green aqua rim color on obverse. Reverse is mostly white. Sharp detail(Looks Unc!) with bold full liberty and shield. Scarcer date in higher grades and this coin is also the interesting thin date/medium O variety listed as rare by Breen. Not attributed by NGC because it is not a variety they list but will guarantee variety is correct as described.

  • Thanks for the description, maybe its just the pics but the coin looks cleaned to me,, If the seller has a good return policy thats not a problem you can look at it in hand when you get it .

The pics are bad,, out of focus and taken in different light conditions , sometimes this is a way of hiding a problem sometimes its just poor photo skills.

Let us know when you get it ,,

    Thanks

The pics make the O look more round than tall, so therefore I believe that is a medium O. A neat variety, and I look forward to seeing good pics of it soon!...Mike

Breen calls a lot of stuff rare that no longer is. The medium O on the 57-0 is a better var on the date, but the 57-0 is common. Anyone who would call this a better date, along with the 59-0 is not with the program. The 58-0 is a scarcer date as is the 53-0 above Fine.
But that's about it for the later stars obverse "O" mints.

The obverse used to be a uniform darker color but the color was removed in the fields and the figures by some type of cleaning, dipping, etc.

Absolutely. Even if he was right at the time there is tons more known about these things now.

Thanks for all the great info guys! I wasn't in search of any great rarity or anything. Just needed this coin for my 1857 Mint Registry Set. Gotta try and kick 100proof1957 out of first placeimageimage

You bought a nice AU-58 coin in an NGC holder for AU-55 money - what's not to like?

I'm with the rest regarding Breen and relative rarity - although he does (did) frequently disclaim that his "rare" declarations were subject to change.

Nice coin, and a great score! image
