Kaiser Satirical

Obverse: The Kaiser, Wilhelm II, with drawn sabre rides his hobby horse while leading his army. Inscription : Ich führe Euch, (I Lead You) - 1914”

Reverse: A one-legged war veteran leans on a crutch and turns an organ grinder; his wife and poorly clothed and starving children stand beside him. Inscription: Is a continuation of the obverse inscription and reads, Herrlichen Zeiten Entgegen (-towards glorious times) -1919.

    Goetz must have had a serious problem with the Kaiser's leadership at that time. Great satirical piece image

    I think this great artwork was inspired by the enormous impact which the lost war had to the people. What did they know? All they knew was the Empire, the confidence in the monarchy, the Emperor as a strong leader. After 43 years of existence, the second Empire broke down and the Emperor left the people alone and "enjoyed" his exile in the Netherlands.
    However, I don't know if he had played with a hobby horse there. image

    He left them alone, there was no leader anymore, no confidence only bitterness.

    It's almost history repeating itself where you could put dubya on the horse and Iraq vets at the organ-grinder...image


    Goetz didn't do any Kaiser satiricals until the "termination of the monarchy" and then his true feelings came out...

    I like this one and it is interesting to think of how many leaders have rode that horse!
