Yap Stone Money A really unusual question

Another member of our coin club ran into a lady who has a real piece of Yap Stone money. Her father was a teacher on that island in the late 40s and he was given this as a gift when he left. It is about 9 inches in diameter and more than 1 inch thick.

This image is from a scan of her snapshot that is not too good. Hopefully I can shoot some good images in a couple of weeks.

Does any one have any idea of its value? They just do not ever show up on the market, since the export of them is forbidden. She also has some very old shell money belts from the islands also.

Just to be clear, if the other member of our club does not buy it from her, I will.

  • I keep finding really unusual things that air-tite does not make holders for. I have about 30 pieces of Swedish Plate Money that also do not fit in them either.

I do use air-tites for everything else.

Before long there will be a web site www.platemoney.com with lots of images and information. I only need to write it. Most of the research is done, and some of it has been started. I just need more time.

No, Tom, it will not be in the next club auction.

I would feel compelled to own it if it were available cheaply even though I suspect
it was made for the tourist industry rather than for a store of value. They did use
some small pieces like this so it's not impossible that it was money.

Whatever its origin such coins are not readily available. I can't help with value ex-
cept to say there is a small but strong demand for the unusual pieces.

Seeing she got it in the late 1940s, I think it may be genuine. I have no idea of its value but I think it is really cool.
