Hate the holder... but I love the coin in it!

It's going to be hard to tell from the pics, but this is one beeee-yoooooo-tiful coin!

This was an Ebay impulse BIN. Denmark 3 Rigsbankskilling, 1842FF. The highest that Krause lists is $30 in XF. I paid $84 for this one, PCGS MS66. I'm very pleased with it.

It's in an OLD PCGS holder that is scuffed, scratched, and generally beat to hell and back, which makes photographing it a beyotch.

I'll probably do a reholder (assuming I can find a kind soul to submit it for me image), but I'm wondering, given the age of the holder, if I should do a regrade and try for MS67?

  • Nice coin. I like the die breaks on the reverse.
  • No experience in this area at all, but don't collectors already factor in the conservative(?) grading of the older slabs?

What I'm saying wouldn't a old PCGS MS66 get as good if not better price than say a new NGC MS67 ?

Reholder, regrade, assume that your nice coin will stay away from you for 3 months. Taking also into consideration what cruzi said, I'd leave it as is if it was mine.

You're probably right. It's just that the holder detracts from the display of the coin. I wonder... would there be any downside to taking fine-grain sandpaper and trying to polish out the scratches and scuffs on the slab? If that's too coarse, car wax?

By reading other posts on the subject of cleaning slabs, they have used Brasso or toothpaste (mild). I know that Brasso works, but then you need to clean the Brasso up.-3Mark

I personally would not spend the $25+, and three months wait, to have the coin regraded. I believe the chances of getting a MS67 are very slim. I would be quite happy to have the MS66 for $84.
