My suggestions for a new grading system.....what's your suggestion?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,488 ✭✭✭✭✭
All the new posts on changing grading systems are interesting. With tounge in my cheek here are my two alternatives for new grading systems:

#1 - two grades, namely NEW and USED; and

#2 - three grades, namely PRETTY, UGLY and the hybrid PRETTY UGLY.

Do you think either system would catch on with collectors and dealers? Do you think TPG's could use same to increase their income streams?

Feel free to tell us your own suggestions for a new grading system.

  • I say leave well enough alone. But if a change had to be made, I would set it up somewhat like diamond grading, with MS coins being graded on four areas seperately. Strike, Luster, Color, & Surfaces.
  • Its fine just the way it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I would say extra fine... lol

  • I guess it really doesnt matter to me what is done with grading....my coins are either in albums, whee they will remain until I'm dead or are coins I like regardless of the assigned grade.

I will say that there sure does seem to be a lot of fuss about this.....which I guess I would understand if I had lots of money tied up and worried about liquidity.
  • Whatever system is used, people will still argue about consistency. No system will solve that. It would be nice to have some way of indicating the degree and quality of toning on silver though!

Actually grading coins on each parameter would make the consistency factor mostly moot.

One might not get the exact same grade each time but the differences will have little impact on value.

    Well, here's a new idea...

Keep the 70 pt. system but add to the slab:

    P-Poor for the grade
    A-Average for the grade
    G-Good for the grade

This type of system would help beat the crack-out artists from getting solid money for poor for the grade coins and also reward folks that have coins that are Average or Good for the grade. The advantage would be to the average collector so that they don't pay good for the grade money for poor for the grade coins. This system would aid dealers because they could give fair money for fairly graded coins. It allows the market place to be more precise on both ends (collector and dealer) and at the same time, it takes a lot of the voo doo out of negotiating.

For example a ms 62 $5 indian common date would trade at $700 in Average for the grade and Poor for the grade might be $550 - $600. By the same method, a Good for the grade 62 would trade for $750-$800. This would create a system where a Good for the grade ms61 may trade for higher than a Poor for the grade ms62, and that is most favorable for collectors and dealers because it puts a premium on good coins and minimizes any premium for poor coins for the grade.

This would give all of the grey sheet enthusiasts more options for sorting their coins/prices with precision. For collectors, the advantage to this system would be that they could get the best coin for the money they have to spend. For example, a collector might rather have a Good for the grade 62 at $800 rather than a Poor for the grade 63 at $1200+.

The result of this adaptation to the 70 point system is that we could keep the existing system and include a letter code to any new coins being graded. With the exception of only a few collectors/dealers, it is the tpg's that would know best if coins were good for the grade, or poor for the grade, or average for the grade so it is certainly reasonable to believe that they could do a fair job of it.
