Sporting News Player of the year

With all the talk of MLB awards this award has largely gone unnoticed. It has history on its side as it began in 1936. It was won this year by Andruw Jones.

Player of the year

edited to add: I assume it is awarded with post season heroics included. I base that on the 1960 winner being HOF 2nd sacker Bill Mazeroski. Also you can see that Ted Williams won it in his triple crown years and the year he batted 406.

Good for you.

Thanks for that Win..... The Hickok belt is a great honor. It takes the entire season in persepective, and is not only limited to stat-meister analysis....considers intangibles. Encompasses the game, not league by league. And thanks for the link, also. Very informative and accurate as to who the great players were, regardless of team affiliations and honors. Regards.

I agree Harry, this award seems to reflect who was the BEST PLAYER for a specific year.

    Good for you.
  • Dirty, what tangibles would yu be referring to? The guy who ran down some kids with his car? The guy who is a jerk and fights his teammates? The guy who made errors on purpose? The guy who is a liar? The guy that refused to DH against his managers wishes? Because those 'intangible' guys are all on that list.

Almost everything in baseball is TANGIBLE, meaning can be measured/accounted for. The only thing that isn't is how one's attitude affects another player, and that is the only thing an 'intangible' backer has to hang his hat on. The news is that one person's attitude doesn't affect how another player plays. Maybe among children it does, but not on any higher level of play, especially MLB. The only thing it affects is who you hang out with, NOT winning games.

If a guy gets 50 saves in 52 chances with a bad attitude, and anotehr guy gets 50 saves in 52 chances with a 'good' attitude, they did the exact same thing in winning games for their teams, plain and simple. One would have to go to grat lengths to prove that their attitudes affected the play of others, because it doesn't.
  • THat list is waay off on a couple of those years as well, and is contradictory as well.

Skip............lol what are you talking about? ran down kids with a car? lol good or bad attitude? where did you get that from?

I found it funny that the POY award went to a different guy in many cases then the guy who won MVP.

    this year being no different.

    Good for you.
  • Win, because I am a little crazy, and I thought it would be a little humorous. Those are examples of actions by guys on that list in the past 20 years. That would be a fun matching game to play, though there may be more than one answer on one of them. They didn't particularly do it the year they won the award though.

Skin - your are obviously an expert statistical analyst. Your posts are pretty amazing. I admire your knowledge and research. But evaluations are NEVER based exclusively on tangibles. This applies to life, the business world and the world of sports. People make significant contibutions to the success of their team or organization that never show up in the "box scores." That supports the ideal of leadership. Sounds contrite, but is a well known and accepted philosophy. Regards.
