Question for Mercury dime collectors.

I do not know much about this series, having only a small number of circulated coins and two mint states coins. I recently picked up a 1944D MS dime. It has full split bands and is toned. The toning is what caused me to buy the coin. Both sides of the coin are toned. The toning is multi colored and dark. The coin needs to be viewed in good light conditions. When it is viewed in good lighting conditions the rainbow colors and luster leap off of the coin. It is very appealing to look at, though since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, those who do not like darker toning may not like it.

Is this type of toning on Mercury dimes common or not common? Any other thoughts on the series and how MS examples of these coins tone? Thanks in advance. SanctionII.

Mercury dimes tone anywhere from none to very dark ugly toning.

  • Denver mint 1940s Mercs usually come well-struck. The black/very dark toning is often from sulfer products but can be caused by a variety of environmental sources. Dark toning on Mercs can be a real turn-off; however, without pics, I hope it is as pretty as you say.
