Toned Morgan Photo Contest - Results are in!

Weird, the original thread is not TTT'ing - I guess because it was pinned to the top, but the pin has "expired" or something. image

In any case, thanks to everyone and here are the results! image

So I guess that means mgoodm3 wins in the amature division. image

They were all great pictures. Will we ever get to find out who took the other pictures?

To be honest, as one who saw the coin, I thought that 22 was the closest to the actual coin.
  • Thanks Neil! I really wanted to capture the wild colors that were there when you caught the light just right. There was that yellow in the lower right, the sky blue at the upper left, the iridescent violet and fuchia. I was trying to use natural sun light and the reflection off the slab just made it so hard. I gave up knowing I wouldn't have the best photo.

I really admire the detail and even lighting of many of the photos. Clearly I have a lot to learn. I do enjoy photographing coins and hope to do more contests.
  • Wonderful contest and an honor to have been a participant....although I should have cropped my pic, I wanted everyone to see exactly what the coin looked like and had external reference points to validate the colours.

    CONGRATS ALL!!!!!!
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

Congratulations Brandon! I'll be kicking myself if I see a run of 1961-64 proof 69 übertoners in your case at the FUN show.

So who wants to share their setups? I used a Canon A80 (4 MP) at maximum focal length with a Cokin +2 close-up filter, since the macro setting on the camera didn't cut it alone. For lighting, I used a fluorescent ringlight (?!), which gave me all the colors, but was a bit flat. I then took a second picture using one directional light to light up the profile and give me some luster and depth. I blended the two pictures together to get the result I wanted. This was the first time I'd tried this, and apparently it worked pretty well for the obverse. I wasn't as satisfied with the reverse, and probably should have lit it differently, but then hindsight is 50-50, right. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next contest.

    Fun.

Setup: I wanted to use the same setup that I do for almost all coins to see how it works. Nikon D70 with 150mm macro lens. 2 high angle lights (300W halogen) moved around a bit to light up the colors that I wanted. I would have liked to have three lights to get more even color, but only had two then. shot straight on - no angle. Angle would have given a little more color, but I wanted the picture sharp.

messydesk - The two pictures merging idea is kinda neat, may have to try that sometime.

I thought it was superb, I would have just liked to see it smaller.

  • I like #9. It didn't have the bright colors I remember seeing when I caught the light just right. The yellow and bright red and fuchia really jumped off the coin when it caught sunlight. The lighting was even and the detail great on #9 but the colors are subdued.

I used a Nikon CoolPix 4500 with natural sunlight.

    Nikon Coolpix 4500, 2 - 75W incandescent desk lamps.

Most of the pics were So good it was very hard to pick the best. It's been so long since I had the coin, I don't remember excatly what it looked like, but my goal was to make the pic look as much like the coin as possible. At the time, I thought I did that pretty well. I guess that has little do do with the final result. Mine was #11.

In the original thread, some people said they could pick out who shot certain ones. Were any of you right?

I didn't vote in the original thread, I just missed it but I would probably have gone for #25 over yours. You always get incredible detail and it shows in this photo but there is a little distraction in the glare at 1 o'clock and 8 o'clock, plus I prefer the contrast of the coin against the white background instead of the black.

I don't mean to be too critical (comparing my photo skills to yours) but you did ask

btw I could tell your work straight away
