Registry Awards???

Congrats to all the winners. Nice to see one of Davallilo's sets make the HOF.

As always the awards generate a lot of controversy. Frankly, I was amazed to see "West Coast's Mars Attacks set" as The Non-Sports Award Winner.

This same set was the 2002 award winner when Bill Mastro owned it and it has only improved from 8.15 to 8.24 in 3 years. In contrast, Carl Riegger's 1962 Civil War News Set now sits at 9.01...an increase of .65 in the past 2 years! PSA claims to base the Awards on "the following criteria: set popularity, difficulty, grade average, completion percentage, domination, degree of competition within the set category...". On all these counts, Mr. Riegger's set is dominant. Carl...demand a recount!

    Frank i agree.

one other thing, this set (west coast) can't even be seen. also the best collection of the yr. went to mosh who also hides all the sets.

    Good for you.

  • They awarded Charles Merkel's 1968 Topps 3-D set the Best Topps Specialty set in both 2002 and 2004, and the GPA never moved an inch. It was 9.90 for both years and still is.

Yes Steve, I went to look at the Baseball and Football winning sets and 4 of the 7 sets are hidden.

Kinda like..." The Best Picture Oscar goes to *****....which no one has ever seen, but we saw it and it's great"

  • Did PSA jump the gun on some of the HOF selections? I use the '52 Topps BB set as an example (even though it's a Big 3 set) w/ 5 entries ...

    1 Charles Merkel .......... 8.80 100.00% 8.80
    2 Don Louchios ............ 8.43 100.00% 8.43
    3 Marshall Fogel ........... 8.26 100.00% 8.26
    3 John Branca ............... 8.26 100.00% 8.26
    5 Donald E. Spence ....... 8.19 100.00% 8.19

Interesting side note: The 2006 set completion percentage has increased to 85%.
  • I wonder what Vargha will do with his certificate? heh©
Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
