Common comment about dollar coins

A lot of my co-workers comment to me how much they hate the size of the SAC and/or the SBA. They don't really care about the coin at all, but really wish it was a size that was larger.

Do they say why? One of the common complaints about Ikes was that they were too big.
How do your co-workers deal with the difference between pennies and dimes? The issues are the same as between quarters and Sackies -- similar size, different edges, different colors. If someone can't easily distinguish between quarters and Sackies, how do they get by with pennies and dimes?

I think one big holdback on the use of dollar coins is the way cash register drawers are designed. There are enough slots for the coins, and bills go in the trays with the spring-secured holders. If you didn't have dollar bills, you'd have to remove the spring thing ( no big deal ) and when the drawer is slammed shut, one or more dollars could bounce out on the back side and get lost or jam the drawer ( which would be a big deal ).

Oddly enough, I lived in the UK when they went from the one pound note to the one pound coin. The public hated the coin, but the government just said TOUGH...it's much less expensive than one pound notes and they last longer. The public complained but the government held fast. And guess what...the public got used to it.
Too bad our government doesn't just do the right thing. Put the dollar coin in circulation and stop printing one dollar bills and begin recalling them from banks.
Cheers,
Bob

That is what Canada did too -- they got used to it, and when I visited Canada, I found it handy to have the loonies and $2 bills instead of a wad of $1 bills. I have not been to Canada since they replaced the $2 bills with the twoonies, but I suspect they got used to those as well.
Sadly, the U.S. government did not learn from the success of our neighbors to the North, and instead repeated the same disaster as with the SBA.

And if they can't tell SBA's from quarters, how do they tell quarters and nickels apart? Same size difference there, and the same color.
<< <i> We are the only developed Western country that still insists on making a low value unit currency just because our people are stubborn. Canada, England, the EU, and most other countries did away with their unit currency years ago. >>
And the greater insult is that we were the FIRST country to introduce the small size unit coin. All the other countries watched what we did, learned from our mistakes, and then successfully made the switch. After twenty years we realized the color needed to be different, maybe after another twenty we will realize that the paper version needs to be withdrawn as well.
We should get rid of the lower denomination bills, I like dealing with coins better.
