Mickey Mantle proof set 1/1000

This set was released in 1995 by Official major league baseball merchandise. #64 is etched in the coin. This makes it #64 out of 1000. The center coin has 24 kt gold. The specs and scratches are from the plastic cover which has never been removed to protect the case. These were impossible to hoard by dealers and are barely seen for sale. I never seen one myself for sale. This set is the real thing in authenticity because of the major league merchandise logo. The strikes on the coins are magnificant. Thought you might like to take a look.

A 24 kt. Gold 3 Coin Highland Mint set /700 failed to get a bid of $59 so I am not sure what the market is. It is one of those things produced shortly after the Mick's death to cash in on the spiked interest. Pretty cool item though- what did it retail for?

  • Yes I noticed the Highland set coins. They look cheap to me. This set since it's MLB merchandise just seems to be the authentice commemoration to Mickey Mantle's death. Plus these coins are wonderfully striked that any coin enthusiast appreciate these as a form of metallic art. The value on this is higher than the "highland set" coins. Plus bullion metals make the coins more Eye appealing.

I recieved this set when I worked with my mom at my best friends dads card shop for 2 weeks. This was in 1995. These sets were extremely rare and a card shop dealer could not order more than one. My mom recieved it as payment for working thier, she wanted it really bad, She loves coins. She gave the set to me years later, its been in a plastic bag and in a safe the whole time. In this whole time I have never seen another like it anywhere. For sale either. 1000 seems like a small number for an authentic MLB Merchandise commemerotive set like this.

You sound as though you think they may be worth some real money. I doubt it as these type of issues just never really take off.

    Looks great though.

    Loves me some shiny!

I used to deal in Highland Mint and other sports coins items. The market for these items peaked in the 1990's and then crashed. The silver and gold items are making a small comeback due to commodity prices.

You could probably get $50-$75 from the right buyer.

Just a side note that the Highland set is also MLB licensed. I am no expert in the field but I have always thought that Highland set the standard for this type of sports collectible. ndleo's estimate seems on the money to me. Sounds like the item is pretty special to you so I assume you will be holding on to it- but I would not take out a seperate insurance policy on it.

Thanks for sharing...Future re-sale value aside(I'm the worst at hobby investments..lol):

This story is a great example of just how our crazy hobby got its start & continues image

No need for anyone to tell us the value, just what it's worth to the individual.

What this set means to you based on several factors & circumstances....Priceless
Sig: Looking for a recent smr magazine, Please pm if you have one to recycle. Thank You
  • well there will never be a 1995 year of death commemorative proof coin set produced again so I hope these are rare. The other coins seem to be private companies with a mlb license such as the highland mint set. Which are for sale on ebay and have only 700. where this is actual major league merchandise From MLB itself to commemorate Mickey Mantle. Only a 1000 made and nowhere to be found for sale they were quickly sold out. In 10 yrs I have not seen another. Will keep an eye out.

I also have a mickey mantle finest refractor and about 8 normal finest Mantles from the topps commemeration insert set. I will try and post a picture of the Mantle refractor I can't remember which card it was hope it's the 1952. If its a psa 10 quality who knows maybe it will get moon money. Its been in a plastic case since i opened the pack.
  • The refractor is no 10 or 9 =/ so i won't take the time to picture it
