That is an interesting story, though I suppose the initials could be for anything. Twenty bucks is still a reasonable price for a counterstamped seated quarter.
I doubt it. The G.A.B. counterstamp isn't even listed, although that doesn't mean it's not contemporary. But it may have been stamped into the coin years or even decades after the minting date. Most likely it's someones initials.
I don't think the counterstamping is modern (Although I don't believe to dates all the way back to 1857 either) But I see no evidence linking it to this "Gentle Annis" person. Without better evidence it could relate to and person or place with the initials GAB after 1857 and before probably 1900.
The wear on the reverse opposite the counterstamp says it was contemporary for the time and circulated as such. I agree that it probably was someone's initials.
