That is an interesting story, though I suppose the initials could be for anything. Twenty bucks is still a reasonable price for a counterstamped seated quarter.
  • LIKELY pure conjecture on tthe sellers part but does seem to have some credence
  • I doubt it.
The G.A.B. counterstamp isn't even listed, although that doesn't mean it's not contemporary.
But it may have been stamped into the coin years or even decades after the minting date.
    Most likely it's someones initials.

  • Ray,

that link does say merchant counterstamp.

    heres the cool part.

my Uncle that was killed in 1964 in a car wreck had the initials G.A.B.

i was born in 1957 and guess what my initials are ?

coin would be significant to me even if its a modern counterstamp !

So how much would you be willing to pay for it?

I can put a snipe in and have the seller drop-ship it to you image

  • I don't think the counterstamping is modern (Although I don't believe to dates all the way back to 1857 either) But I see no evidence linking it to this "Gentle Annis" person. Without better evidence it could relate to and person or place with the initials GAB after 1857 and before probably 1900.
  • makes for good folklore/urban myth

the date and the stamp are mo important to me than the provenence.

    won it for 26.36 !
  • The wear on the reverse opposite the counterstamp says it was contemporary for the time and circulated as such. I agree that it probably was someone's initials.

Great story, but I'd need a lot more documentation before connecting the quarter in question to it. The counterstamp is just intials.
    All glory is fleeting.

Dang, it looks like my snipe didn't fire image

If you need anymore coins with G.A.B. on them - let me know and I'll sell them to you. You can even pick out the coin first!
