Odd Topps Cards

This might seem like a weird topic, but I remeber seeing some Topps cards, can not remember what year, where they actually look like they painted stuff on the players face, example: there was a card that I do remember that appeared as though the guy's eyebrows were painted on, very bad looking. Please post any cards like this if you can find them.

In 1967 Topps had a Who Am I production with 44 cards, 4 of which involved baseball figures--Ruth/Mantle/Koufax/Mays. Picture of each subject was a drawing and it had a disguise scribbled over the face that could be scratched off, They show up on e-bay from time to time, both scratched and occassionaly unscratched, as do unopened packs. Some time back I bought a sheet from Topps Vault with several of the regular cards from the 67 set that had the same type disguises on them. They sold it as a test proof on e-bay, but as far as I know they never released any of the latter type cards into the hobby

  • Stingray,

Do you mean the cards where Topps attempted to touch up the photo so that the players facial features could be seen better? I don't have a good pic of it, but the 1980 Topps Dave Winfield gives the impression that he is wearing eyeliner...Seems like the 1980 Gaylord Perry and some of the '79 Topps Prospects cards are like this too. Some of the cards have kind of a surreal look.

Charliehustle, that is what I am talking about, sorry bob not that. I think if I remember correctly the 1980 Ron Leflore card had some touchup work done to it, there is not a good copy of one on Ebay right not, but that is what I am looking for.

  • Ah, thought so Stingray..Found a beat up Winfield to scan:

1980...The year Dave became a Yankee..and Mary Kay eyeliner spokesman.

Seems like the '79 Giants prospects card has some guy with really odd looking traced over eyes...The '80 Gaylord Perry eyes are really bizarre if I remember right.

  • Just joined and this has to be the first thread I replied to. Minton's great but Oscar takes the cake.

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

What kind of touch up did they do on the Gamble?

The Yankees hat and stripes...Much more noticeable on the actual card.
