Most Overvalued Modern FB RC = Mike Vick

I watched the GB/ATL game this Sunday. Vick is a good player, but I'm not sure what position he plays. The Falcons should just line up Vick as a RB or WR and play Matt Schaub. Vick is painful to watch as a passer and I'm pretty sure he will sustain is huge knee injury if he keeps running.

His RCs aren't garbage, but IMHO they are about 30-50% overvalued. There is no way Tomlinson's rookies should be less than Vicks.

On the flip side I think Shaun Alexander is the most undervalued RC. At 28 he already has over 7000 yds and almost 80 TDs. That puts him on pace to crack the top 10 all time RB in both stats. If the Seahawks make it to the Super Bowl, we could see a big jump in his cards.

I don't really follow football cards, but I'll agree that Vick is definitely overrated. No doubt he's a dynamic, potentially game-breaking player, but it just doesn't seem like he's developed much as a quarterback.

Speaking of Alexander, what card would be considered his 'true' RC?

Saw a stat that with yesterday, he's the first player to get 15+ TDs in 5 consecutive years...and this was game 9!

The most popular will be SP Authentic, but his SPX has a jersey and auto. I think his Playoff Contenders is popular also. I still don't understand how a non-auto RC goes for more than an auto RC, especially when it comes to modern.

The big knock on Alexander is that he piles up his stats in a few games per year against soft defense and disappears in the big games. A couple of years ago I think he got like 10 TDs in 3 games and 6 in the remaining 13. This year he seems to be more consistent.

It should be fun watching Tomlinson and Alexander go for the TD season record this year.

There are many factors involved in the value of modern cards, many of which have nothing to do with what a guy does on the
field. I think we all know about the hype factor. It can last for a long time in baseball, and a few months to a few years in football.
In football it starts with the draft. The premiums are put on the high draft picks, especially #1 as Vick was.

Now look at what Vick has done..his rookie year he beats the Pack in the playoffs, and last year he took his team to the
championship game......that is what collectors remember. There is still potential for Vick.

The brand and numbering of the card is critical too. That SPA Vick was very very limited, and it was one of only 3 autographed
patch rookies. 250 even today , is very limited. LT was a non-autoed rookie in that set. If you want to see that Vick really
isn't priced that much over LT, look at contenders...LT has twice the number of cards, but is valued around the same price
    as the much rarer Vick.

Shaun Alexander suffers in that he was part of a bad 2000 rookie class. That has never been a popular set, whats worse is that
    Tom Brady's cards make 2000 packs expensive...its either you pull a 400 dollar Brady or a 10 dollar common.....that isn't fun.

I also think that Shaun's soft spoken-ness makes him less collectable. You can add Marvin Harrison in that group!

Its all about the hype....once these guys win a super bowl the value of their cards will level off..it happens every year.

  • If shaun alexander is traded his Cards will drop. He will never see the blocking he is gonna see behind Walter jones and Steve hutchinson on any other team in the NFL for such a long period. Walter Jones and Hutchinson are both signed to multi year deals along with hasssleback.

His contract situation keeps his future uncertain.

2006 could be a big year for all-pro caliber RBs on the move. Edgerrin and Shaun will be free agents. Other backs like Ricky Williams, Travis Henry, and Thomas Jones could also be on the move.

If the Colts and Seahawks make it to the Super Bowl, I doubt either will be moved. However both player's success is tied to their offense. As a suffering Lions fan, those guys ain't no Barry Sanders!

  • That's true I live in seattle and I make the debate the money should not be spent on Shaun Alexander. He will be worth about 6 million. If you have an awesome quarterback and offensive line. Then you should stick to putting drafted players into the skill positions. Then spend money on your defense. Our backup maurice morris is quicker than shaun alexander and always does really good when he is subbed in. All you need is a running back who can read blocks and fall forward after the tackle. This isn't hard to find these days.

So the question for the seattle seahawks is pay the man. Keep the statistics and big smile guy who's good at PR. Or just keep the rb spot filled with fresh legs behind your nfl best offensive line. It works for DENVER.

If shaun alexander is trade he will be a NFL Ken griffey JR.
If he stays he will be a seattle legend and a Hall of famer if he stays healthy along with his lineman and hassleback. He may beat Priest holmes #'s who ran behind the KC O-line because the seattle O-Line Is built for a long time to come.
  • Shaun Alexander Is very good at executing the Seahawks System. He can be replaced though. His statistics can't. He will be expensive.
I think since the mariners traded away all there Allstars, Ken griffey jr, Randy Johnson,Alex Rodriguez with awesome career HOF stat potential. That I might prefer to pay alexander so that My favorite team can have a possible nfl legend. Super bowl or not.

Not for long - just wait until Marcus' cards come out.
  • Vick would be great for an option offense, he reminds me of Tommie Frazier, but better. Mike Vick can pass some, so he's not an entire dud as a QB. As for Marcus, he probably has a better arm, but he's a long ways off from the NFL.

Vick's RC are high because he makes crazy plays, so people think he's a great player. His team also wins, so I don't know. There often isn't much of an on field correlation to RC pricing. I mean Bo Jackson is still booked at $5, the most in the set, and he doesn't even have 3,000 yards career rushing. However, people can still see Bo running over people in highlights, and his MNF run against the Seahawks. So I would say that image is everything in this hobby.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
