New Haven show report - Nov 13th

This was a good day to be at the New Haven. No other conflicting shows and a decent turnout. BigD5 also came down to try out the show. Was surprised to see Ellesmere Numismatics set up but they had a gap in their busy schedule. Purchased a nice 1870 PCGS PF64
first gen seated half from them for $1400. So what if it was 20% over bid. It was clean, flashy, and essentially free of hits and lines, certainly very nice for grade. Sold an 1866 NGC PF64 not as clean as that one for $1400 but very attractive nontheless.
Also picked up an attractive original 1831 bust quarter raw that should go 62-63. Eye appeal though is more in the 63/64 range.
BigD5 said I had big kahunas for sticking my neck out on a coin that could come back 61. While he's right, it's been a while since I gambled on anything raw bust (ro-bust?). Original bust quarters with any eye appeal are pretty tough. I don't think you can find an honest 63 for anything near MS63 CDN (ie $2500). Was fortunate that it looked no worse once I got it home to inspect in proper lighting. I use a 100 watt Halogen at the show but it doesn't show everything. 3rd coin I picked up was an 1877-s NGC MS65 PL seated quarter. Very original, a tad deeper in color but very clean and flashy. Could not pass up a coin that choice for $1475. While these have been relatively tough to sell the past 2 years (unless flashy, white and PCGS) this will be a longer term hold.
Ellesmere had a nice grouping of Morgans and Commems. Some decent type as well. I got to see Nocerino's ex-1827 bust half dime in NGC65 and it was fairly decent. The reverse was a technical gem 65 with nice eye appeal. Obverse had a few light field lines that would keep it from crossing imo. It's tough to value an NGC bust coin like this when the coin is worth from $5500-$7800. You still have to buy the coin, regardless what the holder says. Very attractive coin overall and was a very fair value when offered here on the boards for $6800.
Vince Blume, Jim V., and others had a nice assortment of stuff. Did not notice any early gold or anything else that blew my socks out.
I brought my 1862 half and a few other things to show BigD5.
Come to think of it, Darin had a really nice Type 2 3cs in PCGS MS63 that I should have bought. I'm gonna PM now and take it at over "ask". Thing is, these are rarer in 63 than 64 so that fact that a 63 costs less than 50% of 64 money is sort of stupid. Hope he didn't sell it already. I routinely see 64's and 65's but not so often a nice attractive 63.

But someday. As it is, I barely have time to keep current on the forum and all the hard asset web sites.
One older gent at the show was asking for information on casino gaming tokens from the 1960's. Franklin mint made. I had no clue.
Nocerino had a very attractive AU55 1862 half with album toning.
Ellesmere had an 1842 LD AU55 quarter with decent color. I've always loved the 1842 quarter but unfortunately there are still more coins than date set collectors. But that's a date I'd love to find in strict choice to gem UNC. BigD5 also had a pretty NGC MS62 1829 bust half. Trying to find a really nice 63 or better of any date has become sort of difficult the past year.
Bruce Kutcher was making the rounds along with Dave Carr. With those guys on the prowl you have to be quick or anything really good and price too low has been picked up.

Did not see much in toned commems, esp the better ones. Ellesmere had a decent 65 Grant as I recall and an attractive 67 York. But it takes something special to grab one's eye on commems.
Didn't really see anything like that. Bogdan did have a neat looking common Oregon in a greenie 66 holder.
I will let you know how the bust quarter turns out...good or bad.
I didn't want to pay what the seller was orig asking as it was just too much risk imo. He was cash strapped and we are able to agree on a price $400 less than he was orig asking. It helped. As long as it 62's I'll probably break even.....63 would be a win. The reverse on the coin is 64 which may help to sway it. I usually send stuff to NGC as I've been doing that since 1988...better chance that they would 63 or 64 it so that's the best way to go up front for me. PCGS doesn't appreciate orig as much as NGC.

I have made that statement in the past and was nearly run out of here.

It sure doesn't seem that NGC appreciates orig. more in my specialty. Is it really true in others?
