1804 Dollar Restrike or Electrotype

Anyone know where a vintage restrike or electrotype of this coin can be located? I am not looking for one of the recent modern copies that are found on eBay.

Thanks.

The Mint made an electrotype of the class II piece in their colection. Bob Campbell (All About Coins in Salt Lake City) owns it and I'm sure it's over $100,000 (probably way over)

  • I believe in Bressett and Newmans book The Fantastic 1804 Dollar they mentioned that several electrotypes were made contemporaniously, but they make no mention of what ever happened to them or their current location. This is kind of odd because I would think they would be highly desired items as well.
  • An electrotype might be really difficult to find but more easily would be to find an 1801 or other 180X bust dollar that was altered into an 1804 at some time in the last century. I have had and sold a very nice VF20 1801 that was altered to 1804 in the past. With a very nice patina on it it looked just like the real thing till you put a glass on it or compared to diagnostics of a real one.

  • Yes an altered date piece would be easier to find but they have no direct connection to the "real" 1804 dollars and the contemporary electrotypes do, though it is a bit remote.
