Should I pay for PSA/DNA Quick Opinion to get rid of this obvious fake?

Bad fake of a Pacific Jerry Porter autographed rookie

What's wrong with the card?
#1 - that looks nothing like Jerry Porter's real signature.
#2 - Pacific did not serial number their autographed rookies that year.
#3 - the real autographed rookies had a Pacific stamped certificate on the front (lower right side).

I emailed the seller, showing him links to real Porter signatures and a real Pacific auto rookie from that set and explained what was wrong with the card. He emailed me back that he pulled it out of a pack. I figured arguing with him was pointless.

I've emailed the high bidder to let him know the problems, but even if he retracts, some other person might fall for the scam.

Would you spend the money for a PSA/DNA Quick Opinion on this card to ensure it got pulled?

  • no. buyers need to do their own research.
  • i wouldn't spend the money. just wait for the aucton to end and then email the winning bidder if you want to do so.
  • I'm confused. With all the scams on ebay, why are you butting in to a 99 cent auction the first place? I appreciate looking out for each other here and in the hobby and certainly for scams on ebay, but you're asking if people think you should spend a bunch of money for a quick opinion just to save some schmo 99 cents and rid the world of this horrible danger. Hopefully you already know the answer... Don't waste your own money.

Well, I successfully warned the original bidder, but wasn't in time to warn a later bidder before the auction ended.

As far as why I would stop a scam on a 99 cent auction, I would be pretty sure that this seller has run lots of other scams, and they don't all end at 1 bidder and $0.99. Somebody who bought a fake and didn't know it wouldn't claim that he pulled it our of a pack when you show him 3 reasons the card is a bad fake.

Oh, and IIRC 2 strikes from Quick Opinion will get a seller suspended.

Contacting a buyer is against eBay policy the same as selling counterfeit autographs. Nice Job.

Allen, if ebay does something to me for notifying a bidder that an autograph is fake, that means eBay is actively aiding in and abetting in the seller's activity, and the seller's activity constitutes a crime in California (ebay's home state).

I'm willing to risk eBay suspension for the oportunity to have standing to seek an injunction against the enforcement of that eBay rule on the ground that it contravenes public policy. It would also give me standing to be a class-action plaintiff in a suit for damages against eBay for an unfair business practice.
